Reminder on Brunson Friday — the deal as it stood over the summer: 1) Brunson released 2) Atilla drops appeal, sent back to TR to serve out his sentence 3) TR staggers release of other Americans 4) Halkbank fine is transparent, TR gets notice far in advance of what is coming

Amb. Hutchinson's imprecise language, while since clarified, feeds into a particular strain of Russian paranoia, with lasting effects. & in

Will the short-term horror of what happened in Istanbul upend the US emphasis on its self-declared maximum pressure campaign against Iran? Will the horror of Istanbul force a rethink of how US personnel are getting paid in NE Syria?

A worrying sign: Moscow appears close to deploying the INF-violating cruise missile, the 9M729.

As the discussion about the rules of engagement for joint patrols in Manbij bog down as they work down to the tactical level, rhetoric increasing to try and force changes to the US position on the roadmap. We’ve seen this movie before.

So I dont see the NYTimes story as either confirmation of a taboo or indicative of actual planning. Instead, I see this as civil-military friction in a very, very weird war. https://www.

To think that LBJ would authorize a nuclear escalation is counter to the way in which the US fought Vietnam. It makes no sense. It does make sense for Westmoreland to push for it, perhaps as a means to force changes. The military leadership felt the ROE was too restrictive

At this point in the war (1968), American leaders (LBJ and McNamara) refused to allow the Air Force to target Vietnamese SAM sites. Same goes for targeting MIGs on the ground at Phuc Yen, along with no bombing zones around Hanoi.

Your reminder that the US NC3 system is designed to ensure a launch order can be relayed in a matter of minutes, and that as long as the order is valid and authentic at no point are there any other checks in the process
