  6. Just had a long chat with an Emirati friend and had the following realisation: I simply cannot remember the last time I met an Arab, Kurdish, Iranian, Turkish (etc) activist who is not depressed and/or suffering from serious anxiety. I honestly don't think I've met a single one.

    The more the world sees how MbS does things in Saudi, the more parallels with Saddam Hussein seem relevant. Contexts are different, but parallels are striking: blindly megalomaniac, reckless, prone to dramatic overreach, obsessively ambitious, brutally intolerant of dissent.
