Lots of CSA victims become offenders - it's cyclical, and if you'd rather flay offenders alive than try and be pragmatic in stopping that cycle, for the sake of preventing harm against children, then you suck!

"Why don't they get help now then?" 1) The dismal state of mental health options in the United States 2) In almost every state, mandatory reporting requirements are in place that supersede a patient's confidentiality rights that go direct to local police. There's no help to get

Addendum to this - it's perfectly okay to have a gut-check response to the concept of CSA, because it is awful. If you want to protect children, you have to get past that gut-check and be pragmatic with policy. You have to want to help pedophiles not offend.

"You have to want to help pedophiles" is a hard thing to think and actively say, but preventing any crime, especially those against children, begins with campaigns to diverge offender's behavior. Preventative treatment is always the strongest option. The stakes cannot be higher.

As much as i agree with this notion once you offend youre on my shit list tbh. I got no interest in feeling sympathetic once the deeds been done.
-
And that's fair - there's no expectation of you otherwise, but we should live in a world where offenders have reasonable hope of rehabilitation and preventative measures to protect children before they're preyed upon.
-
I dont really like talkin on this on my "professional twitter" - but I definitely agree. But i also wanna point out a lot of offenders who molest kids and shit arent doing it cuz theyre attracted to em and have trouble controlling themselves. Its a demonstration of power.
-
Regardless of underlying motive, the best chance we have of minimizing child exploitation begins with preventative programs and fostering a culture where it's okay to seek help for problems like these, which is a big departure from normalizing the crimes themselves.

It's funny. I see most furries absolutely disgusted by it with no pause for arguments and consideration. They're 100% instantly "they must all be killed off! Gross fucks!"
-
Yes... its really awful.. A lot of us didn’t feel comfortable with publicly pointing out that he needed help more than anything else.. I’m guilty of being among the silent. It’s a very sad situation.. I don’t think everyone will think differently about this either...
-
It's sort of a social prisoner's dilemma - no one can make the first move to help (or advocate reform, or treatment, etc) without committing social or political suicide, for lack of a better term. This problem is bigger than furry, and we ourselves shouldn't be expected to lead.

Also, not in mean to meddle, but I'd like to also point out how sheltering the fandom can be towards these kind of fetishes, is important to realize when an artist is being "sexually open" or "link supportive" against when there's a clear issue there --->
-
*kink (damn autocorrection ) ---> what I mean is that is our duty as part of this community to not let pass any of this behavior before it reaches a point of no return and (instead of helping people like that from the very start) just get angry mobs against them at the time
-
The issue is bigger than we are as a community, and I don't want to belay any sense of expectation or duty on people that wouldn't be comfortable with it, or in a way that would make us outliers on the issue. This is an issue at the fringes of mainstream discourse.

I’ve had this discussion with a few people, but do you think it’s possible to “cure” pedophilia? Or is it closer to that of a sexuality? Because treatment wise I keep thinking about those who were given gay conversion therapy and how they really never changed deep down.
-
It’s unequivocally a disorder that should be treated, and if possible, cured.
-
Well, homosexuality was also called a disorder and people were treated for it in an ineffective way. I totally agree we need to focus on treatment, but I’m not sure how you’re supposed to do that. Is there a proven “cure” for pedophilia?
-
No idea, but on face value adults should never be having any kind of sexual or romantic relationship with children. The difference in harm between pedophillic and homosexual relationships is the key difference between the two, inappropriate to compare them to begin with.
-
I wasn’t saying it was the same thing. I’m just saying if sexuality and attraction works the same way for pedophiles as with straight or gay people I don’t see how you’re supposed to treat it instead of just making it a suppressed desire, which doesn’t fix the issue
-
Norway is looking into how to handle this issue since we have a focus on rehabilitation rather than punishment and we don’t even know how to deal with it. Some suggestions have included chemical castration and such
-
I think it varies case by case and severity and causes. If the causes can be treated I’m sure it can be cured. Usually a cause is trauma as a child to begin with that never got help until adulthood. Others well it depends.
-
That’s true. I haven’t looked much into psychology beyond the basics so I wouldn’t know too much about how they treat these sorts of disorders, it just seems to me that in most countries you just go straight to jail regardless of how minor or big the offense is
