Some speedrunners do it in order to get the world record in completing a game the fastest. Videos about the history of speedrunners completing games in world record times were popularized by Summoning Salt, a YouTuber. In October 1, 2018 Summoning Salt's "Music List" (a document that lists all of the music that he uses in his episodes) has a better numbering of his video episodes than on his YouTube channel; it reveals that he made 22 of these episodes.[1][2]
