WebCite Consortium Members

Since its official launch in October 2005, more than 100 journals are already using WebCite on a routine basis.

Using WebCite can happen at different stages in the journal production process, and ideally journals should implement the WebCite archiving process at all of the following levels:

1. instructing authors to use WebCite before they submit a manuscript (example)
2. instructing their copyeditors to replace cited webreferences with WebCite-archived links during the copyediting process, if the author has not done so
3. automatically transmitting XML files of ready-to-publish articles to WebCite so that cited webreferences are archived before or around publication date. Optionally, WebCite may replace cited URLs with links to the archived version.
4. WebCite can send a crawler to archive webreferences in backissues if journals send us XML files of their backissues. Optionally, WebCite may replace cited URLs with links to the archived version.

Journal editors and publishers: To become a member please contact us (fill in the application form). Membership is currently free, but the costs of running this service may in the future be defrayed through membership fees.

Membership levels are as follows:

• Level 1: Instructions for authors mention WebCite
• Level 2: Copyeditors instructed to archive webreferences using WebCite
• Level 3: XML manuscript interchange with WebCite before or on publication
• Level 4: Back issues crawled
