New in on *how* jihadis will inherit Syria rebellion. Pls read in full, but basically: • Syria ‘18 is ‘08 • ’s supposedly crushed 1970s-1980s uprising reincarnated after 2011 (ex-rebels returned to form/inform new militancy)

  6. If Turkey becomes serious on removing the extremists from Idlib, and professionalizing other forces, it'll be able to reduce the problem from minus-20 to something like minus-5. It won't be a perfection solution, but the alternative won't be better at all.

  7. Even if one believes this could only be resolved through a government control there, an interim solution through Turkey is vital. Wherever you stand on Syria, unless you don't care about what works better, you'd want at least an interim Turkey role in NW to resolve this issue.

  8. Let's be honest, northwestern Syria has a big al-Qaeda problem. I don't think this could be resolved without serious US-Turkey collaboration Turkey won't do it on its own, simply because it has other priorities. Infighting there, without a clear outcome, is too risky for Ankara

Once it became clear the offensive was delayed, complacency creeped in. Nobody is talking about dealing with Nusra/AQ/terrorists, even though the deadline is 2-3 weeks away. Should’ve been the priority for those seriously concerned about human lives & Idlib safety.

So ISIS seems keen to promote the Ahvaz attack. Circulating an English translation of the spokesman’s statement on it:

The whole statement is just 3 minutes. The last part also mentions the fight in Hajin, near the Iraqi borders, and calls on ISIS fighters there to fight till the end.

In a rare move, ISIS releases an audio statement by its spokesman Abu al-Hassan al-Muhajir specifically to comment on the attack. As I said it’s most strategic for ISIS. He says the attack “hurt the prestige” of the IRGC, feared by the West, and avenged Sunnis. Vows more
