Did You Know...

First Woman Law Clerk Hired


In 1944, Lucile Lomen was the first woman to be hired as a law clerk at the Supreme Court by Justice William O. Douglas. Lomen was born in Nome, Alaska in 1920, and attended the University of Washington School of Law where she was the editor of the Law Review. After her clerkship, Lomen returned to Washington State where she worked in the Attorney General’s office for three years. In 1948, Lomen took a position with General Electric where she remained for 35 years until her retirement in 1983.
