    The Syrian regime's prisons are a vast network of concentration camps, where torture and murder are endemic. Despite the solid evidence, it's unlikely justice will ever be done, certainly not by an international court.

    Of the many, many criticisms to be made of 's government, its handling of the Syrian refugees really isn't one of them, and it comes with ill-grace from European states that have left Ankara to handle this, and the - challenge, alone.

    That isn't true: "The KGB was always firmly subordinate to the Soviet Politburo". Andropov's KGB ran the Third World policy and even ran active measures against Brezhnev's POLITBURO to get them to sign-off on the invasion of Afghanistan.

    9 September 1976: Mao Zedong finally died. Mao is the only rival to Stalin as the most murderous tyrant of the 20th century. Sadly the totalitarian regime he created in survives in somewhat modified form to the present.

    In other words, if the question is purely human rights and democracy, then it is extremely risky to tip the scales in favour of a military caste that has upheld the dictatorship in so far in collaboration with the drug barons.
