Channa Marulioides var Kalimantan last update

Kalimantan Flaring

Kalimantan is perhaps the most beautiful Channa Marulioides that I've kept. The part I love most about kali is thier band, yes they have lots of them almost looking like Channa Asiatica. The band extend to the belly. And they possessed strong colors when kept in the right PH. They are bold and always ready to show their best. When you approach the tank they will flare and show their colors. 

The only shortfall of the Kalimantan is in the flower department, "usually" they dun have them much, but you'll have plenty of bands to ogle. The Batik pattern on all 3 fins are amazing, unfortunately not all the batik remains when kept from young. Plenty of work to groom retaining the batik to ensure they dont fade away.

Its ashame I've to sell my Kalimantan, but all good things must come to an end so that new fish can take its place. Thank you for following the progress of my Channa Marulioides var Kalimantan and hope you enjoyed the journey we had grooming this fish to be an excellent Champion.

Tanning Marulioides

Another way you can bloom the flower of your marulioides is with the tanning technique. First lets understand a little bit about the flower. The flower is actually a dead pixel, marulioides are very unique fish, they possessed the ability to change color at will like a chameleon. But when the flower is formed that scale is spoiled and no longer changes color, it cannot get darker or lighter.

As mentioned many times marulioides caught in river or big water always shows minimal flower, maru caught in dead water like peat swamp shows maximum flowers. Maru would need the color changing ability to survive, they can change color to hunt and to escape from predators.

Meanwhile maru living in black dead water swamp do not need the color changing ability as much or maybe the low PH somehow destroy the color changing ability and the result will be plentiful of flowers or plenty of spoiled scale.

Filtration Part 3

Lets take a look at the configuration of filter media. Over the years my preferred method is go sponge-less at the inflow. Many people who had seen my sump tank is not convinced it will work. but this has been done for more than 6 years. The reason I go sponge-less is because my inhabitant are most time monsters with very bad eating habits. Debris will be flying everywhere and if they are filtered at the sponge, they will rot there. So to over come this I let the debris go directly into my sump tank, in my sump tank I've a section for live fish and ghost shrimp. These will be my cleaner crew. At the end of the section I do keep a flat sponge to filtered out rubbish leaving the sump tank and food material caught there will be minimal.


At the first compartment I've added K-1 since last year. How good is K-1? I'm running spongeless and my cleaning crew used to be all fatty. Since I've added K-1 they will crushed everything to bits and pieces and now I've to resort to …

Kangkung (Water Spinach)

Kangkung for yr sump tank and why haven't I thought of that before? They're like indestructible and you don't even need substrate.

In 1 days time they grow like 7", with this speed they are a Nitrate monster muncher.
