Turkey's imbalances in 2001 stemmed from large fiscal deficits; the private sector was a net saver. This time around the private sector is the driver of external imbalances (with government incentives in the form of credit guarantees).

The lira is now worth 10.3 rubles compared with 16.9 rubles on Sept. 1 , 2017. Both currencies are volatile. The idea of trading in dollars is to have a relatively stable/predictable pricing mechanism for buying and selling goods. Choose the euro instead maybe?

Erdogan urges partners to trade in local currencies instead of the dollar. But the lira has dropped massively against other currencies too e.g. 40% against the ruble in a year

Turkey, once was close to ’s HTS group [ too], has now designated group as terror organisation. The decision is right, but timing speaks volume of ’s fluid relations with radicals. Jolani, the head of the group, was right when he warned about the move days ago.

This, incidentally, is part of what still interests me in the Zarrab case, and why it’s still relevant. There, Giuliani tried to kill a case involving a Turkish corrupt shadow economy. The same cast of characters pop up where vast, secret flows of money undermine democracy.

So Turkey has only just listed HTS, led by Al Nusra/Al Qaeda in Syria, as terrorist UN says about 10,000 Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) are in Idlib, which Turkey occupies. US labels them terrorists and UN says any group merged with Al Qaeda is considered so
