Surgeries for men, and for other AFAB trans people

"AFAB" is a shorthand for "assigned female at birth."

Listed are some of the surgeries that are medically necessary, or desired, for trans men and other trans people assigned female at birth. A few people undergo them all, often at great cost (and often with great satisfaction afterwards), and some choose to undergo none or only some. They include:

• Bilateral mastectomy ("top surgery" — reshaping of the chest and breasts towards masculine contours and flatness)
• Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)
• Oophorectomy or salpingo-oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries, first; removal of both ovaries and Fallopian tubes, second)
• Creation of a penis, usually accomplished (if accomplished at all) by one of two techniques:
  
  
  • Metoidioplasty — a procedure done on a clitoris that has been enlarged with the use of testosterone; it then resembles a cis man's penis in appearance, though smaller than usual. The labia are joined together, with two prosthetic balls inserted within, to form a scrotum.
