1. Fiction and reality are not the polar opposites we would like to consider them. Because namely: real people produce and consume fiction. It is not an ‘opposite’ of reality but a product of reality. Here’s a TED article on it if that’s your fancy. If you have a jstor account this is a pretty good read. There is a reason in your high school English class you spent time analyzing even fiction. Learning about the time it was made, the author, and parallels it has to current events at the time.
2. Lolicon and shotacon are child pornography. It fits the definition. It is fabricated sexually explicit content featuring minors. Fictional child pornography (written, drawn, animated, and comics) are banned in many countries as well. Where it is not banned, it is usually an exception to the rule. Now that we’ve covered that porn depicting children is in fact child porn, lets move on to what that means exactly:

From it: “Many pedophiles acknowledge that exposure to child abuse images fuels their sexual fantasies and plays an important part in leading them to commit hands-on sexual offenses against children.” Meaning no, many pedophiles are not being prevented from actually assaulting a child with child porn, but encouraged. “Therefore, even if an individual is not actively molesting at the time he is investigated for possessing child pornography, an extensive collection indicates his sexual preference for children, and is a red flag for possible future plans to molest.”
The trading of child porn on the internet is particularly harmful. Communication wit other pedophiles means they can validate and normalize the behavior to themselves and others. (same source as above).
Furthermore: “Child pornography is also used to break down the child’s barriers to sexual behavior, but serves the additional purpose of communicating the child molester’s sexual fantasies to the child.”(same as previous source) Meaning no, it isn’t “the same as regular pornography being used to groom a child”, like hcotd claimed.
4. Most of the fears surrounding making a link between criminals who consume child porn are about “risk tarring some men [explicitly stated men] unfairly”. Never mind the fact they already committed a crime of viewing and possessing child porn. I see this as nothing more than rape culture personally.
To recap (tl;dr): lolicon and shotacon are child porn as much as people would like to believe they somehow aren’t. Investigations of criminals, as much as we can gather from internet pedophiles, and experience from law officals and experts in the field of CSA agree its a red flag to real life child abuse. And surprise surprise, fiction does not exist in its own little vacuum.
I believe as we find more, the link will become more and more clear, like the link between animal violence and violent crimes against humans.
