100% greed. My impression is that they were testing the US' resolve in this region after it waffled on Kirkuk and Afrin.

Nah. I think the only thing keeping Iran and Assad at bay (eg. shooting down Turkish warplanes) is Russia threatening them. Russia is basking in the glow of two NATO allies fighting eachother in a proxy war.
