    Bad governance breeds crisis, those breed wars that in turn create failed states and societies. It's the fundamental truth often ignored about the larger MENA region. I say, keep ignoring that truth and risk our collective security & prosperity.

    A year after the arrest of Mazen & Partick, Mukhabart came to his house where his wife and teenage daughter were still living and asked them to vacate the house within 12 hours. They refused so they forced them out and told them a regime military officer was moving into the house

    Stalin was a terrible military commander. In fact, he thought that he'd get arrested after the war was won. As he should have been. I am tired of the "these wild people just needed a strong hand, otherwise they couldn't have a country" nonsense. It's dehumanizing and disgusting.

    Yep. Either in contempt or have a fluid relationship with it.

    In certain circles, "Islamist" is dog-whistle for "practicing Muslim who does politics". Muslims are expected to demonstrate that they hold Islam in contempt before being allowed to speak about politics.
