Some of the specifics:
1) the EU has given the green light to some €10bn on infrastructure spending, including in Genova http://www.repubblica.it/economia/affari-e-finanza/2018/04/16/news/dalla_pax_autostradale_con_lue_10_miliardi_per_genova_brennero_venezia_e_i_grandi_nodi-193999170/ … If anything, the EU has highlighted the need for Italy to spend on infrastructure https://ec.europa.eu/info/sites/info/files/2018-european-semester-country-specific-recommendation-commission-recommendation-italy-en.pdf?utm_source=POLITICO.EU&utm_campaign=68889b127b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_08_15_04_46&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_10959edeb5-68889b127b-189830765 … (ht @politicoryan)

2) So why wasn’t infrastructure in Genova upgraded? The need for development in Genova has long been debated, and there was a specific project on the table. Risks to the Morandi bridge raised years ago http://www.ingegneri.info/news/infrastrutture-e-trasporti/ponte-morandi-genova-analisi-infrastrutturale/ … &http://www.ilsole24ore.com/art/notizie/2018-08-14/genova-storia-ponte-morandi-polemiche-crollo-125715.shtml?uuid=AEZna1aF …

3) M5S has long been against the development project. Here it calls the risk of the bridge falling “a fable” http://www.movimento5stelle.it/listeciviche/liste/genova/2013/04/crescita-felice-comunicato-del-coordinamento-dei-comitati-no-gronda.html … Here’s Grillo attacking development plans https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pg4Y2k6vYRA&app=desktop … and more from the M5S here in Genova’s local council https://www.huffingtonpost.it/2018/08/14/tra-dieci-anni-il-ponte-morandi-crollera_a_23501977/ …pic.twitter.com/OPqBKbHx93

4) And here is the current M5S infrastructure minister earlier this month saying that all major infrastructure projects, including Genova, should be paused and reassessedhttp://www.ansa.it/liguria/notizie/2018/08/01/toninelli-rivedere-gronda-terzo-valico_9abf66dd-0200-4758-a6e9-21aa70b489cb.html …

The tragedy isn’t the fault of one party. But it speaks to deeper problems 1) In the M5S: it built much of its popularity on the back of protest movements (anti-vaccines, no high-speed rail, no infrastructure projects, no CETA and so on) - but in gov't you cannot just oppose

2) Spending on road maintenance dropped 12% in the first 5 months of this year (https://www.quattroruote.it/news/industria-finanza/2018/06/21/strade_crolla_spesa_in_manutenzione.html …). Italy has one of the lowest levels of road works, and the highest costs per KM, in Europe (http://www.europarl.europa.eu/RegData/etudes/STUD/2014/529059/IPOL_STU(2014)529059(SUM01)_IT.pdf … & https://public.tableau.com/profile/claudio.baccianti#!/vizhome/Spesainmanutenzionedellestrademedia2010-2015/Spesainmanutenzionestradale …)

Want an example? Visit Rome. It is literally falling apart. There are holes in the city.

3) Italy’s political class – across parties – need to stop blaming others for its failures: migrants, the EU, the euro (Italy is the only euro nation to see per-capita GDP drop since 1998: so maybe it ain’t the currency) are all excuses used to hide failures that are homemade.

I’m surprised he hasn’t blamed it on immigrants yet.

Let me guess, similarly to
@Nigel_Farage who blamed immigrants for traffic congestion (he was late to a meeting) they blamed it on immigrants weighing the bridge down? - 1 more reply

@matteosalvinimi non e’ colpa dell’unione europea. Forsi i fondi sono stati spesi male o semplicemente finiti in mazzette ! -

Basicly the EU in a nutshell...

Not every EU-country. When problems were detected on the 'Hollandse brug' in The Netherlands, our government just responded accordingly. You can read it at the Dutch Wiki-page - https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollandse_Brug … . But of course, the Dutch are bridge-builders :-) .

I meant blaming other countries ;)
