shout out to my boy Collin from grade 10 math who introduced me to this site he's a real g
Shout out my boy Chris from 10th grade PE who told me about it when I asked him how TF he got all his hip hop news
Whenever people ask me that I just awkwardly say "this place on the internet" lol
When most people get their hip hop information from Instagram it’s not that hard
Yea I mean my friend thinks I’m some kind of Hip Hop genius because he just listens to the rap caviar playlist on Spotify

we keep hitting additional 100k milestones faster and faster, we're gonna start having these every month lol

Thats kinda when I joined (I joined a bit earlier) and for a solid few months the only thing this sub could talk about was TPAB and Kendrick. Diversity now is better though it was the worst when we were big and exposed to /r/all.
The TLOP pre-release/release in general was something else on this site lmao
100~150 was the sweet spot, 300 was like the first shitpost overhaul (not a bad thing but the beginning)
It’s cRazy how much the sub changed over time. I miss the daily discussions!! 😥
You used to be able to just talk about random stuff every day tho
Well general discussion is on Sundays. This is a rap sub, I'd rather we keep conversation on rap music
I agree I'm just saying they were different before. And they were fucking hilarious for a bit (whodatmiami etc.) before it got old
I remember getting into actually discussing hiphop about that time, found it just before TPAB
Crazy to think I was fuckin with this sub back in December 2012.
Honestly, nothing's changed lol.
That is complete bullshit...that place has changed...a lot. Shoutout to Khaled
Jesus christ this sub is blowing the FUCK up. Took over 7 years to get to 500K, little over a year later we're at 800K. We doing Drake numbers rn.
joined in like late 2012 can't believe I've been here for that long damn
I remember when we would hit milestones like 50K and 100k we'd revote on the essential list. I was just coming to hiphop then so I didn't take a vote because I didn't know what was "Essential" but it was cool to see the list grow and evolve. Do we still have a subreddit Essential list somewhere?
oh shit found the 50k reboot thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/hiphopheads/comments/13xoix/hip_hop_heads_essential_albums_voting_thread_50k/
At some point the sub got too big to allow voting for the Essentials List and it started being put together by committee. The most recent list was done about two years ago (I think) and can be found here (note the tabs at the bottom for separate regions.)
this is awesome, you should throw the link to this spreadsheet in the wiki/faq
There's a Favorites List too which is voted on like the old essentials list.
Holy shit... I never noticed how fast the sub grew... I remember talking about how Funk Volume was coming up and going to be great... And how ASAP Mob would die out..
I joined the sub in like January 2014 I think, it's crazy to think how big its gotten since then.
I joined around April of that year, when Push dropped Lunch Money. The growth has been crazy!
I joined towards the start of 2015. Damn, there was some great music to discuss that year (TPAB iconic).
Being on r/all would be the equivalent of having features, so you might be right g
Nah fam, being on r/all is like going on tour

This sub gonna get more watered down by the day. Will still be a good place to discuss hip hop but underground stuff won't be discussed as much unfortunately.
Yep. Just look at /r/music. That place rarely upvotes stuff that isn’t popular, and they have this weird bullshit hatred for anything pop or hip hop. Bleh.
Are there any ideas for a new sub? I love this one but I do want a community for the old heads. There’s so many epic songs that we all haven’t heard from the old school hip hop era that never gets any love this sub
They kind of already exist. Just type in your favorite artist, producer, or label and put an /r/ behind it.
You’re both right. He means behind the word as if you read it before the word. And you mean in front as in the thing that comes first.
This sub should be called Hip Hop, and what you're describing should be Hiphopheads imo. I mean, nothing wrong with this sub being called it but there's very few, relatively speaking, people here that I think would be accurately described as a "hip hop head".
I'd be interested in a sub for more underground/street rap, r/trapmuzik exists but it's pretty dead. Hip Hop is so diverse now, only having 1 sub to discuss every sub genre can get a bit stale imo
I love this one but I do want a community for the old heads.
/r/90sHipHop exists, but there's not much activity and even less discussion.
Yeah but modern underground hip hop seldom gets quality discussion here either. It's going as strong as ever too. There's a lot of great artists out there putting out quality content but there seems to be a lot of hate for backpack rap here.
Yeah, I find that a lot of the newer stuff that I listen to never gets more than 5-10 upvotes here (if any.)
There's also /r/backpacker, but I stopped following it because it didn't really seem like it was actual backpack rap.
The most popular mainstream artists being the only artists that get any attention here is an issue, but I don't know how it can be addressed. The sub's just too big for stuff like that.
I've been finding a lot of good discussion on Facebook groups. Especially for the modern underground scene
The problem with a new sub is that it needs really strict moderation while still being a chill, fun place to be. This place wouldn't nearly as terrible if mods were able to control the toxicity and hatred that gets thrown around here a lot. I keep saying waaaay too many aggressive shitposts just because someone isn't following the popular opinions
Yup. If we crack down then we're being Hitler, but if we allow it like we do then everyone is a cunt to each other.

Being aggressive about one's taste in hip hop is fundamental to hip hop itself. Take that away and this sub falls even deeper into r/music territory.
I’ve been thinking of this too. I want a sub where oldheads and lesser known artists get disused heavily
Quick solution - just ask u/TheInfinityGauntlet to snap his fingers
This is the most violent reference I've ever heard and I was in thread about gg allin on here.
For a balanced r/hiphopheads you have to be willing to give up everything.
It's already happening unfortunately, but just remember, if you see some dope underground shit, make sure to upvote to try to get it to new people.
The daily discussion thread is still a useful place for finding underground stuff. And I've been here a couple of years and that hasn't really changed, though the front page has.
That's true, very good point. I get put onto so much new stuff on the DD threads.
Daily discussion is still good. I don’t think many casual hhh subscribers really good there.
Oh underground stuff gets posted alright, just nobody seems to give a crap about it.
TBF i know its a meme at this point but enough people upvoted brockhamptons earlier tracks like HEAT and FACE back when they were underground and now look how much attention they get here.
To be fair, a lot of underground cats are doing fairly lyrically dense shit that's not relatable for a lot of the userbase here, shit like HEAT on the other hand hits that mark perfectly so it's no surprise
yeah i agree bh is super i guess suited for suburban and more casual hiphop listeners which is why they blew up. ever since like GOLD they've sounded like they'd be right at home on radio stations
People keep saying that, but our overall traffic has remained static for years.
I'm sure the mods would be open to ideas about preserving the underground portion of the sub if you offered some up. Maybe a series of threads like the DD but for underground discussion only or something
This has been the case since 5,000-10,000 subscribers or so. Happens to every online community about music when it gets too big.
I always laugh when I see comments like that regarding any sub that's gotten huge. I've been on this board since mid 2012 and I remember people bitching that the sub was getting to big
Yeah, this sub was absolutely trash to begin with. It was a bunch of nerds posting the same white backpack rappers over and over. Look at the fucking comments on the Pitchfork review for MBDTF, it’s all “gay fish” jokes and people calling Kanye trash. The fact is that hip hop is the biggest genre of music right now, so the biggest new releases are gonna rise to the top.
Why not shift underground discussion to /r/backpacker ? That sub needs more love anyway
This has been said since before 100k lol. I mean you're right, but it's been going downhill for a very long time

damn we only hit 700k two months ago this place is expanding live crazy
i remeber when i joined around 250k and i thought that was a lot damn
edit: actually my account is 5 y/o so i joined when it was around 100k sheeeet
throwback to the most memorable thread this sub has ever produced. i still listen to this non-ironically every few months
a whole generation of new subs who'll never know the one true hhh god whodatmiami
I don't have the link and i don't remember the thread but basically some dude was saying he loved 6ixnine and he knew what the streets wanted and all that tough guy hoodrat mumbo jumbo. Checking his comment history someone found out he was in the Shake It Off music video and he is the whitest, preppiest most suburbanite ass looking motherfucker in the world ahhaa he knew what the streets wanted tho. They wanted him to be home safe
One of my favorite things on this site is enlightening new users with the glories of our lord and savior whodatmiami
I stumbled upon his twitter the other day. Have to say it was exactly what I expected
Lmao if I still had twitter I would follow that nerd for sure
I think the guy that made that used to write really quality content til the sub shit on him so hard for trying to make his own music
Die a hero, or live long enough to become the villain - r/hhh rn
I remember being around for that post on another acc, holy shit it's been forever.
I think it’s almost time for a compilation of the Classic Hip-Hop Heads posts and comments again
lol it’s so funny to think how different that remix would be today based on how trap has evolved.
Do you know how long I’ve been looking for the remix with drums
The thread with the server having it play at the fancy restaurant cemented it. Miss those days.
jeez how long ago was it that we got to 700k? feels like yesterday. it’s funny reading all the other milestone threads too
I’m surprised this adlib wasn’t used more in the Gambino skit

i love you all even though you're all white and think post malone is good
im just here for the history or whatever them shits called
Lmao I get the joke you're trying to make but this doesn't even make sense
Yo this don’t work lol. Aren’t the suburbs usually related to being rich? They’d be the first ones with Internet
Not being rich but definitely having priority internet access.

I’ve been on this sub basically since it’s creation and it’s always been 90% suburban kids. I was one of them, once...
God, I've been here since atleast 100k, and it's so weird seeing these actual stats. I knew the sub got bigger but I didn't know HOW MUCH it actually expanded
Yeah I remember every milestone having people say it had got way too big
Ay I feel like such an og on this forum....been here since 2011 across a few accounts.
Shits changed. We uses to have more discussion, way more backpackerism, trap was hated enough to have it's own sub, and there was some awful discussion stuff. Like what rapper would win in a fight? What rapper would you smoke with? Were their own threads.
Used to have a handful of regular users and power users. Shoutout whodat, buges, pitts, m3, zig, snuggie, and so many others I've forgotten. Used to be more recognisable names than randoms, now I don't know shit.
Back when it was all about being alternative and underground and names like rick Ross and Wayne weren't well received at all... here's to a milli users soon!
There should be another census soon, it'd be nice to see how the demographics have changed with all the new subscribers.

For the history boys, lift yourself just dropped and we scooping the whoopidy rn
Holy shit I recognise all the names in the 50k thread and remember the decision to make hiphopimages a thing..... I've been on hiphopheads forever, when being into bangers was alternative here and it was all cunninlynguists and rhynesayers
i remember when this place had 50k subs.
wild to see how big its gotten since.
Looking at those old threads and I’ve been here too long, I’m a veteran to this sub ewwww
Does anyone know a cool alternative forum or community to join? I mean Im a booty goon like the rest of you so it's not like i need oldhead threads I'm just curious
I didn't even realize it but I've been here since about 200-300k holy shit this place grew. Some people gripe about it some people embrace it me I just want y'all to know that I love you all. And your taste is trash probably.
Ngl this is probably the place I spend most of my time on the internet
