Wow. The U.S. passport office just called and told me that due to an “error,” the government has *retroactively invalidated* the change of gender marker it authorized on my passport last year. They won’t renew my passport w/ correct name & gender until i submit a new doctors note
I’ve been hearing horror stories about the gov’t refusing to renew trans people’s passports and demanding they “re-verify” their gender, so i included a copy of my doctors letter just in case. Apparently that wasn’t enough. They now want me to redraft w/ diff language. 
Essentially the govt is claiming the doctors letter — which uses the same language as hundreds of other letters my clinic gives out to trans patients — doesn’t meet requirements for a passport gender change I have a feeling we are about to see more of this gatekeeping very soon.

To be clear - the government *already authorized my passport gender marker change last year* — even if the requirements didn’t change, my trans status triggered a review that resulted in my *entirely unrelated* passport name change application being delayed. This is gatekeeping.
i do appreciate the intent of folks saying “call your senator” etc, but asking a trans person to have any faith in this political system is kind of a fucking joke. this isn’t about one administration; it’s about decades of anti-trans animus manifesting as administrative violence
I really wish I had gotten it last year. My doctors note is a year old now because I couldn't afford a passport. And since then, that doctor hasn't been practicing because his house burned down and he was on medical leave. So maybe they won't even accept my letter now.

Maybe. I'm sitting in the office of my pcp rn, about to ask if she'll prescribe my HRT, because I just ran out of the meds my last clinic prescribed me. But they dropped the trans specialist while he was on medical leave, and are being shitty to us now.
Update, waiting at pharmacy. She said she wasn't comfortable with prescribing "a lot" of hormones. So she has issued a prescription of what I used to have, for a month, apparently. Saying I need to find another doctor who treats trans patients.

But at least she upped my Wellbutrin. So maybe I won't have a panic attack next time I run out of HRT again.

Im so sorry- its stuff like this that make me think I need to wait to transition. Hopefully the issue resolves for you soon.
i’m sorry to hear you say that. if it helps you feel braver, please know that all of this is worth it. transitioning is the best thing i ever did in my life and i wouldn’t give it up for anything
That does make me feel better, thank you for taking the time to respond to me with those words. It does mean a lot since world is getting scary. I honestly hope that this whole issue gets resolved for you quickly.
