How Corrupt Is the United Nations?

Owning the Libs, but at What Cost?

The perks of jerks.

House Speaker Paul Ryan had a good story to tell when he took to the lectern on Tuesday. Flanked by House Republican leadership, Ryan touted the positive effects of Republican reforms on the economy and individual take-home pay, the quality of health care available to American veterans, and successful efforts to combat human trafficking and opioid addiction. The headlines that emerged from that event were not, however, about Republican legislative accomplishments but the GOP’s intraparty conflicts. When Ryan was asked about the president’s apparent desire to punish his critics who served the country under a Democratic president by stripping them of their security clearances, he dismissed that prospect offhand. “I think he’s trolling people, honestly,” the Speaker said. In other words, the president wasn’t seriously contemplating the grotesque abuse of his authority. He was only owning the libs.

Praising the Iranian Regime to Own Trump

The enemy of my enemy is still my enemy.

President Trump issued a warning to the Tehran regime Sunday evening, and it was as over-the-top as its ALL-CAPS formatting suggested:

To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!

Trump’s tweet came in response to recent comments from Rouhani, in which the Iranian president told Americans that “peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars.” Unhappy with Trump’s decision to pull out of the nuclear deal, Rouhani and his boss, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, are lashing out as they usually do: with classic Khomeinist sloganeering and the occasional terrorist plot in a Western capital.

The New Left Is Coming for You

The new normal.

There was palpable exasperation among political observers following the publication of the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. Despite all the criticism that conservative opinion-makers and Republican officeholders leveled at Donald Trump following his bungled press conference with Vladimir Putin, Trump’s standing among self-described Republicans actually improved.

Iran May Be Wearing Out Its Welcome Even in Syria and Iraq

The bloom is off the rose.

It’s no secret that Arab countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates loathe Iran. What’s far more surprising is that Iran seems to be wearing out its welcome even in the Arab countries with which it is most closely allied. That, at least, is the message of both a recent study of Syrian textbooks and a recent wave of violent protests in Iraq.
