"They are promising no retribution on anyone in the southwest but nobody trusts or believes that," a senior U.S. official told CBS News.

Except, of course, literally all the major towns, who are going for reconciliation.

Dozens of ground escape routes are being explored at this time, according to a Western diplomat. ... If a ground evacuation is not possible, Russia would need to be involved in an air escape.

What! Just walk across the border!

There is no guarantee that the Kremlin won't use information about the White Helmets' exact whereabouts to enable their slaughter, rather than to save them.

We are quickly heading back to cold-war-era style propaganda. Sad!

Except, of course, literally all the major towns, who are going for reconciliation.

A lot of the people in those towns don't believe there will be no retribution, they simply don't see any other choice.

If they believed they would be slaughtered they would fight for their lives instead of surrendering. See for example Fuah / Kafarya.

I don't think it's that clear-cut, they wouldn't know what would happen. Not trusting the government's claim isn't the same as being 100% sure they will do the thing they wouldn't. Preemptively responding with violence is the opposite of what anyone who wants peace would want to do.

The people who write these articles must be living in a parallel universe :

U.S.-protected safe zone...regime violently assaults the southern region of Syria,....in Daraa. There are more than 1 million people there. And all of them are targets for the regime....

I mean, is a lack of information that leads these journalists to write that or is it deliberate?

They've willingly maintained a parallel narrative of the war for years that has been successfully spread as the "real" story of the conflict, one driven by a combination of relying solely on opposition sources, American statements and a sustained belief in neoliberal intervention.

One person's freedom fighter is another person's terrorist. If the US had an armed opposition group that tried to overthrow the US government, those captured or surrendered would be charged with terrorism. I hope Canada has the sense not to allow these people into Canada.
