Are sweet lies preferable to bitter truths? Do we, the masses in a sea of delusion as to our *actual* power, continue to pretend we live in a world where even the most democratic govts exercise a level of power over our lives that would make the most indomitable Emperor blush?
The angst against rulers like Erdogan is b/c he simply doesn't care for the sophistry surrounding democracy. He understands its true nature. This is unacceptable for the West which holds the world to a standard, browbeats them to it then flips when they get near it (Egypt).
Much in the same way, a successful authoritarian state like China defies the West's demands for democracy and shows people don't care as long as they feel like their country is prospering and has stability.
The West wouldn't actually support them to democracy, they'd just sabotage it along the way in favour of a docile authoritarianism so that China remains a backwater while the West (read: America) continues its imperial hegemony.
