It still is, look at most majority Muslim nations. The romanticized image of "the people rose up to support teh gays" is silly. The people rose up to oppose the banks. We called it "OWS". It ended up a punchline. Your activism works only if the people with money approve of it.

Wait hold on. If you believe mob rule had been ruling against homosexuals for hundreds of years, why in the world would you be in favor of furthering the influence mobs have? You just admitted they have once and therefore could potentially be turned against you.
