    b) We don’t know what exactly the Israelis have agreed with the Russians. If that agreement is contravened, we’re likely to know when the Israelis act. Israeli action may itself be part of the agreement, in terms of laying down real limits for Iranian/linked participation.

    Still useful for background, but, as of now, Washington seems to have made its choice. Now hope for a negotiated end in the southwest rests mainly on the Jordanian-Russian bilateral channel.

    Syria's southwest matters. If the United States is going to protect its interests and the interests of its closest regional allies in this corner of Syria's war, it needs to invest in talks and produce a solution
