Calvin Mercer
Dr. Calvin Mercer’s work on religion and transhumanism includes co-editing, along with UK scholar Steve Fuller, Palgrave Studies in the Future of Humanity and Its Successors, a new series that addresses human enhancement issues from all disciplines and points of view. Dr. Mercer is the co-editor of Religion and the Implications of Radical Life Extension (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009; reissued in paperback, 2014); The Body in Transhumanism: The World Religions Speak (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014); Religion and Transhumanism: The Unknown Future of Human Enhancement (Praeger, 2014); and Religion and Human Enhancement: Death, Values, and Morality (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018). His scholarly articles on the topic are found in Dialog: A Journal of Theology, Theology and Science, Religions, and other edited books. He was founding chair of the “Human Enhancement and Transhumanism” Group at the American Academy of Religion. Some of his work is summarized in this podcast interview. Also trained in clinical psychology, Dr. Mercer practiced professionally part-time for over a decade and uses this discipline in his published work on religion, as exampled in his 2009 book by Praeger, Slaves to Faith: A Therapist Looks Inside the Fundamentalist Mind. He is professor of religious studies at East Carolina University and gives public lectures on the religious implications of human enhancement technology, fundamentalism, and other topics.

I was born and raised Unitarian Universalist, while attending Methodist and Catholic affiliated schools. I went on the religious quest as a teenager, and as a result, I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In the last 10 years, my religious quest has continued to seek truth across religious traditions and integrate truth “wherever it can be found.” Most recently, I am participating in a theology certificate program through the Graduate Theological Union. I currently identify as a Transhumanist Unitarian Gnostic Mormon Pagan but that can be more succinctly labeled as eclectic religious humanism. My educational background is in family studies and human development (with a graduate degree). I am a graduate of a startup incubator program working on a tech platform to engage Americans in working cooperatively to address poverty in the US. My company is currently in hibernation while I homeschool my three children, two of whom have special needs. My tech interests are deep learning and AI, particularly how they can be applied to social issues like poverty and resource distribution. My ideas for the CTA over the next 3 years include: virtual summits for a fun and tech forward way to bring people across the world together to discuss and learn about Christian Transhumanism, work groups form to tackle various social and health issues, state chapters, and startup weekend/maker events where people pitch concepts and get started on products and technologies. I think CTA’s primary strength is its focus on integrating all aspects of being using holistic methods. All pursuits of knowledge and understanding can be integrated into the holistic well-being of individuals and society. This philosophical underpinning can be an effective guide in finding balance between disparate fields of inquiry.

I was raised a secular Jew with parents who gave me full permission to “decide whatever I wanted to believe in.” I ended up choosing Jesus. Having never been to a church before that, I approached Christianity with almost a complete blank slate. Fast-forward decades later, and I’ve participated in or at least tasted almost every major type of Christianity, as well as grown in my understanding of Judaism and Islam and other faiths. I’m a progressive evangelical charismatic practioner,as well as an avid critic of the progressive, evangelical, and charismatic scenes -- because I think it’s important to be self-criticial in whatever camp I participate in.
I was raised in a very scientifically-oriented, tech-savvy environment and as a high school biology teacher, I’m very positive about evolution being reality and the Christian faith needing to have both feet on the ground about the natural world, and about theology.
I do not see technology as the way to God or the way for humans to be enlightened, I think those things will always remain matters of the heart and spirit and free will; but I do see technology as the way forward for our material selves in this material realm, and I am happy to lead the way forward technologically and theologically for those of faith to reconcile their belief in an unseen, uncreated kingdom while living in this created kingdom, and to wholeheartedly embrace technological adaptations to enable humanity to thrive and succeed in the cosmos.

I am what one would call a self employed philosopher. Art happens to be one of the vehicles I use to communicate one idea or another. Different Ideas become different bodies of work evolving through time. Each piece is merely an idea in a static state of being. Hopefully becoming seeds of inspiration for any and all who encounter me.
I aspire to become the artist of our century through publishing my book 2020: An Artists' Perspective on Building a Better Future, public seminars, shows, charity events, and civic associations.
I was born and raised on the East coast by my father, moving to New Orleans at 20. Life has a tendency to turn on it's ear and scream PLOT TWIST.... I began my art career in 2012 after being tutored heavily by Elaine Adel Cummins, and by the community of artists in Jackson Square. Australian, Engineer, Christian (mostly Anglican but also have been in Baptist and Charismatic/Pentecostal churches, honorary catholic occasionally in Spanish speaking places), work in construction. Keen to see Christianity impact the developing AI governance systems and coming technology changes.

I want Christian Transhumanism to become more structured, and I want to use this election to promote the following:
1. A wiki of all our knowledge, discussions and commentary to guide people’s learning.
2. Hangouts – with attendees better curated than the ones Micah ran in the past so we get the right people who have the natural connections. It’s ok for USA residents but Australians can’t make it to meetups in Nashville.
3. Cross-cultural reaching out. I would like to connect with any Spanish-speaking similar groups.
4. That we should be non-political, and accept people of all political persuasions, even Trump supporters. (I’m not one). As Micah said we’re a center-defined group, not a boundary-defined group.
My overarching desires for CT are to be:
1. A clear conduit for the transforming and relevant gospel to remain with humans into the future.
2. A well-thought out and intellectually tenable system of thought, building on what is a currently a bunch of eclecticism.
3. Powerfully linking our two arms to make a compelling pitch to all, be they christians, transhumanists or neither.
4. Salt and light to the secular transhumanist movement which is sadly lacking in grace and riven with factionalism and "too hard" topics no-one dare broach
So please, vote for me. If successful, I will pursue the above two sets of 4 points from the board.

Neal Locke is a former High School English teacher, current Presbyterian pastor, and future monastic bicentenarian. He holds an M.Div. and a Master of Arts in Education, both from Princeton Theological Seminary. Sometime in high school, I awoke in my bed from unsettling dreams. Catching hold of a label on the back of my shirt, I pulled, exposing a portal to a Guatemalan factory where women and children worked long hours for low pay. Shaken, I realized my suburban world was not at all what it seemed.
Vigorous action was required of me, but I was not yet clear what sort.
In 2003, I spent six months in prison for civil disobedience while working to close the School of the Americas, converting to Christianity while imprisoned.
I thought after that perhaps I could settle down to enjoy reading Game of Thrones while drinking some chamomile tea. But in dreams, various shades, ghosts of my peoples' oppressions, appeared to me. My prayers to the God of Abraham did little to focus my mind back on books and cooking. I was forced to join the Occupy encampment in the wintertime for several nights at a time--an exceedingly bad place for reading.
After the camps were cleared, I could not return to tech work. Instead, I started the Food and Faith Network at the Quixote Center, building grassroots alternative food economies in faith institutions that give low-income families the ability to purchase inexpensive shares of produce subsidized by higher-income ones. In an effort to scale the model nationally, I built an online store that simplifies the administrative elements of produce purchasing.
Again I felt my work was done. Perhaps a move to another country, like Ecuador, would be just the thing. Rainforests, hammocks, fresh-pressed maracuya juice, and books on Kindle! Or perhaps I could write a work of escapist science fiction? But alas, my final proposition was in error. For I found no comfort in deconstructing myself to assemble a novel, piece-by-piece.
My completed 84K sci-fi dystopia novel is about a young man in an unequal society controlled by a vast artificial intelligence that harnesses the human dreamspace for consciousness. Conceived of in the dark Bush years, it is a work that explores the power of reading to combat totalitarianism, and the necessity of abandoning privilege to awaken the true self.

I am currently mostly employed as a developer building websites for socially-conscious organizations while snatching time on the side for my burgeoning science fiction career.
My wife, Charity Ryerson, is a badass human rights attorney who sues multinational corporations for crimes against humanity and keeps me honest. We live in Chicago, raising our two small children, and attend a Mennonite church.

A previous life involved pastoring college kids at The Falls Church Anglican in Washington, DC and consulted with the Convocation of Anglican Churches in North America regarding outreach to young people. Before that, writing apologetics curricula and teaching ‘worldview studies’ in private classical academies across the country. I have studied Practical Theology at Oxford University and Strategic Design at Parsons School of Design.

I am foremost a child of God redeemed and a participant in the company of the Crucified. There my identity begins and finds its fullest expression. Nothing can be achieved to improve on this undeserved gift. In this journey I am daily re-oriented towards the path of humble transformation. Some days I heed the call faithfully, other times I fail at it spectacularly.
I was born in Brazil and moved to the United States with my family when I was 15. I am married to the beautiful, full-of-life and mysterious Priscila. She has been my companion, greatest advocate and best friend for the last 19 years. We were gifted with two adorable girls, Sophia and Anna who have happily made our life richer and more chaotic all at once. They continue to teach me how to laugh, play and learn about Disney princesses.
I started my education completing a degree of Political Science from Davidson college. I then have spent over 14 years working for a Fortune 50 company doing finance and marketing analytics. While doing that, I had an opportunity to complete an MBA at Regent University and now more recently a MA in Theology at Fuller seminary. Yes, I like to study. Beyond that we have been involved in different churches doing volunteer ministry for years and occasionally traveling to meet with other brothers sisters in the global church. More recently, I am have found a home in the Anglican church, the only place that could accommodate most of the idiosyncrasies of my spiritual journey.
In my down time, with the generous help of my children, I build beautifully imperfect masterpieces with Legos.

I was raised as a Mormon and have gone through the whole gamut, up to and including serving a two-year mission in California. In the three years following that time my views have shifted fundamentally, though I would still consider myself Mormon. I've been interested in transhumanism since I was a teenager, after first encountering the Mormon Transhumanist Association. I was fascinated with how it privileged and dovetailed with the components of Mormon thought that I most loved: an understanding of the infinite capacity of human beings and humanity in general, the pathology of death and the need for resurrection of the body and the world, and an uncompromising insistence on life and relationships. My views have evolved a good deal since then, but my interest in transhumanism has only deepened. After my time as a missionary, I was introduced to Alan Watts, and subsequently to a good deal of Eastern thought and religion. I turned to meditation in general out of a personal need to deal with some negative experiences I had as a missionary, and in that I encountered psychology and really fell head over heels for the field. I don't know if I have a neat label nowadays, but I'm interested in discussing what may be our most decisive problems from multiple angles to find the right responses. I’ve personally benefited from the deep civility and adventurousness of this group. No one’s perfect, but the CTA seems sincerely and uncompromisingly invested in the conversation of how to introduce Christian perspectives into transhumanism and how to help Christianity evolve into the rapidly accelerating 21st century. Not only do I admire this community, but I think we’re producing genuine value at the bleeding edge of religious development and religious transhumanism in general. I think a risk we should be mindful of is becoming too remote from the "mainstream," to a point that transhumanism becomes another alien group rather than a disposition toward technology and mortality in general. I'd hate to see Christian transhumanism become just another de facto denomination, rather than a set of principles, say, that could benefit individuals of varying backgrounds.
