    Muharrem Ince is more similar to Trump in atttiude & rhetoric than he is to any other leader. Loves ratings, hates foreigners especially refugees, uses alternative facts, enjoys Twitter polemics, and has been accused by women of sexual harrasment.

    Thread. Pointing these things out about Ince / Akşener doesn't excuse excesses of Erdoğan's tenure, which are real. The "valiant liberals vs the despotic sultan" frame continues to cloud most Turkey analysis. Worst part: Syrian refugees ultimately stand to lose out the most here.

    Erdogan should have known better. He himself was a victim of that state ideology one day. He was bullied, persecuted & sent to prison for reading a poem deemed dangerous to the state! Today, He is doing the same thing to Selahattin Demirtaş under a different pretext.

    The modern day Turkish Republic & its Kemalist ideology was founded on a dual oppression against Kurds & conservative Turks. While Erdogan lifted the latter, the former continues to be the state agenda! Turkey will never rest until its Kurdish problem is solved.

    I was amazed by Dr Mahathir's detailed knowledge of the Kurdish issue when i met him back in 2013. For PM of a distant country with no huge foreign policy portfolio, he understood Iraq and Middle East better than many so-called experts and career diplomats.
