2/ $F did something similar back in 2003 for the Focus RS Mk1, the performance version of the Ford Focus. Most of the assembly would take place in the regular factory, but cars would then be driven to a nearby hangar, where some performance parts would be fitted, largely by hand.pic.twitter.com/2ZfZhwXM5R

3/ Why would Ford do that instead of setting up a proper Assembly line? Ford sold about 3 million first gen Focuses, but only 4501 of the performance RS version. It probably didn't make sense to set up a proper line for such a low volume.

/4 If
$TSLA is indeed making AWD/Performance versions in that tent, this could be quite telling for the demand (or lack thereof) for performance versions of Model 3.Show this thread -
/5 IIRC, they were fitting tiny temporary wheels on the Focus and manually drove them to the other assembly site, some 10 miles away. I read that long ago on a dead tree magazine, so I may not recall correctly, I couldn't find anything on the Internet.

Possible! Although not clear why they wouldn't integrate performance version into established line which has capacity, still. Elon said they built an "entire new line". For me, it's reworks... They have a rate up to 40%. Impossible not to have enormous reworks buffers on volume.pic.twitter.com/ckGUsyfQ8m

Possible they are doing a few DWD and P for the news cycle and investor letter of Q2. "We started making DWD and Performance models on a new line installed in just three weeks." Why can't they add a new line in say Buffalo or Nevada in three weeks then?

To me it looks like a parts warehouse with no a/c etc

Is this serious car production planning ? They know all the time the need to introduce the awd model and after years of thought thats the solution ?

This has been Tesla's MO from day one. They are horrible at planning. They underestimate cost, construction, testing and in the end have to rush to meet deadlines.
