    5. Syrian Shi'ites – to whom Iran could appeal on a more direct ideological basis – are a tiny minority in Syria. And lots of Syrians have ehh feelings about Iranians specifically, who, like Turks, can take a similarly superior attitude towards Syrian Arabs.

    4. Second, even as Iran is evidently working to establish lasting organizational and social links in Syria, Syrian society has its own antibodies. Syrians of all sects are hostile to proselytization and meddling with the country's complex and delicate sectarian makeup.

    3. Meanwhile, on the claim "Iran’s real goal here is to use militias to weave influence into all aspects of Syrian society": First, I don't think we should just dismiss that Iran is primarily in Syria for the reason it claims, that is, to secure the survival of its vital ally.

    2. U.S. and Western inability to understand how countries can invest in the Syrian system – not necessarily capture influence at the regime's expense, but buy shares in an Assad-led order – is a persistent analytical shortcoming, and one likely to limit future Western influence.

    Tragic!!! Regime attack comes following the assassination of Dr Moussa Qonbos. A well-known & liked philantrope in Al-Hara. In the past couple of weeks, he was involved in secret negotiations with the regime, modelled after , 2 avert onslaught vs his town

    5 civilians were killed by Assad regime shelling on al-Hara and Aqraba in northern Daraa. One of those killed, still in his Eid clothes, was little Muhammad al-Qawarit
