A neat fallout has happened from the "fictional minors in drawn sexual conduct" post. On one side, I'm being called a "bigot" because I said "It doesn't meet the legal definition of child porn, but it can be prosecuted under a separate law." On the other side, I've got /1

Whats about crack... Meth? No?

Frankly...those really more a case-by-case thing for me to assess. Heroin killed a family member I was close to, though, and after self-assessment I don't trust myself to advocate effectively for a client accused of dealing heroin, especially if I know they're guilty. /1

As zealous and effective advocacy is most important when your client is guilty.

Wait, so you would defend other drug dealers just not heroin dealers?
-
Heroin is my "hard no" on defense. I lost a family member to it. I don't trust myself to advocate effectively for a heroin dealer. Others are a case by case assessment.
-
That's fair enough. I know a few barristers over here in the UK that are hard bastards that defend/prosecute anything.

I once said this to a cop locally, and his response was "Shit, you mean a lawyer with a conscience?"
-
I guess with the negative representation of lawyers in the media you can't be surprised with that comment, eh? In reality, you would have to have a strong will and an even stronger stomach to do it.
-
Not surprised. Disappointed, though.

I have one rule: I won't sue lawyers.
-
I’ll sue the hell out of a lawyer who commits malpractice. So long as they aren’t in MY county.
-
But what will you do for a boy named Sue?

I hate child abusers of any kind. I could never serve on a jury regarding that. I couldn't be impartial. And even worse, I have a convicted child molestor in my family. Family get togethers are awkward.
-
I'd honestly try to be recused from the jury on any of those cases if I wasn't a lawyer on the grounds that I have kids, and it's a sensitive subject for me where I wouldn't expect reason to be my guide.

Who does represent child abuse cases? I presume ultimately someone is forced to do so, but I can't imagine anyone volunteering...
-
I turned down a job at a firm when I was looking for my first legal work where that's ALL they do.

It really is a shame that some people can't separate academics and personal morals. It really ends up stifling objective discussion.

Yeah, made the mistake of trying to explain the fantasy vs reality, and legalities involved in a Facebook group. That didn't go over well at all. They refused the evidence showing their assumptions were wrong, and were only capable of attacking me instead of debating the issue.
