8/ When you travel through northern/eastern Syria and notice all the different front lines, you get very much the idea that Syria is divided into three "sectors". 1. U.S. sector (north/east) 2. Russian sector (largest - west, north, center) 3. Turkish sector (northwest).

7/ Manbij is conservative, tribal society. Arabs belong to different powerful tribes. Some tribes pragmatic &cooperate with current Kurdish authorities. But some tribes want Turkey to take over. While other tribes want Syrian army back ("Assad is Arab. Kurds &Turks aren’t.”).

6/ Extra complicating factor in Manbij is the fact that its inhabitants aren't mainly Kurds but largely Arabs. Manbij isnt like Kobani or Afrin, cities that are/were mainly inhabited by Kurds. As everywhere in MidEast: Lots of distrust btwn ethnic groups. Same in Manbij.

5/ U.S. officers in Manbij send (via translator) Whatsapp msgs to Kurds: "Captain passes his regards to you &says we are supporting you.” After comments by president Trump about possible U.S. withdrawal from Syria, another msg: “Don’t let the news disturb you, It’s all rumors.”

4/ Relation between U.S. and Kurds in Manbij very good. They even carry out joined anti-terror operations against ISIS sleeper cells. Also U.S. troops visit Kurds on frontline opposite Turkey/Syrian rebels. They share information and drink cup of tea.

3/ To make things even more strange - some of the Syrian rebels that Turkey is now working with and who are opposing the Kurds and the U.S. troops on the frontline north of Manbij, were actually trained & funded in the past by the U.S.

2/ While in Manbij, it became clear to us how complicated and awkward situation is. U.S. is working with Kurdish fighters who Nato ally Turkey views as "terrorists". Mortars near frontline in garden of small U.S. base pointed towards Turkish troops and Syrian rebels.

1/ Hello all, everytime I file a story in Arabic, many followers ask me to write in English. So I did that. We tried to explain to you the complicated situation in Manbij, Syria. It is an honour that The New York Times "At War" published it. Please read and share. 👇
