Japan Opens Cancer Genomics Center in Tokyo
Tokyo, June 2 (Jiji Press)--Japan's National Cancer Center has opened the Center for Cancer Genomics and Advanced Therapeutics in Tokyo.
"Information from hundreds of thousands of cancer patients will be gathered here, as Japan has a universal national health insurance system," Director Hiroyuki Mano told a news conference that marked the opening of the center Friday.
"The information would be valuable for developing new therapeutic and diagnostic methods," Mano continued.
In February, the health ministry designated 11 institutions across the country as core hospitals for cancer genomics medicine, including hospitals at the University of Tokyo, Hokkaido University, Osaka University and Kyushu University.
The ministry also named 100 other hospitals as institutions that will work with the core hospitals.
