    FYI: US terror designations go through a rigorous interagency process. This is a complex story, but several informed sources tell us that specific intelligence justifies the language used in this designation amendment. We encourage the US gov't to be more transparent on this.

    The US military initially assessed that the Taliban-Haqqani Network was responsible for an assault on Afghanistan's Ministry of Interior yesterday. But the Islamic State's Khorasan "province" quickly claimed responsibility & has now released a purported photo of the 10-man team.

    According to a new State Department report this week, the Taliban continues "to assassinate and threaten religious leaders with death for preaching messages contrary to" its "interpretation of Islam or its political agenda.” Hardly the behavior of a group looking to reconcile.

    Keep in mind that previous efforts to negotiate a "peace" with the Taliban ended in a fiasco -- an utter embarrassment for the US. Those talks should be used as a case study in how one doesn't conduct diplomacy. I may have more on this soon.
