A lame, unrealistic reading of Turkey. Relations with regional actors like Russia are driven by a wide range of mutual interests based on regional realpolitik from energy to Syria. Not because it is ‘upset’ w/ NATO,nor does it need to be brought ‘back under the fold’-condescending

So, EU countries that banned the AK Party from campaigning are allowing the CHP, IP and HDP to campaign in their countries. Fantastic understanding of democracy. Well done.

And what evidence do you have that these symptoms - which you are not basing on any factual analysis are if at all ‘contagious’ as you claim? This article makes no sense whatsoever. Neither does the use of the photograph. What is it that you are trying to say?

Turkey’s transformation process has nothing to do with the developments in E European governance since the fall of communism. Lumping these countries together under: ‘disregard for EU borders, international order,& liberal democracy.’? What evidence r you basing these remarks on?

While we’re on the subject of reminding ourselves of basics, lets have a look at what article 6 tells us about where article 5 applies:

Sen. Lankford in error comparing to as ‘allies’. Israel is not a member of , nor can it be according to art.10 of the NA Treaty which clearly states members must be a ‘European state’ Last I checked, Israel is not in Europe.

These are just elections in another country guys. Chill out. ‘autocratic regime’? - ‘that shakes Europe’? 😂 And wasnt it France that had something to do with being ‘offensive in Algeria’? Hallucinating are we? Must be consumption of that lethal cocktail of desperation & hate.

Disarmament did make the world safer during the cold war. But today we need a fresher approach. It does not matter if there are 1000 disarmament regimes if unarmed civilians are still being killed with bombs and bullets and those who do the killing are not held accountable.

2.What persuasion, what pressure, moves people to condone a coup? ( among them former colleagues of mine in EU universities) But at the end of the day- sure, you are all champions of democracy. Hypocricy- also a Greek word is it not?

    1. It is very sad to see an EU country like that has suffered the horrors of military coups in its own past, grant asylum to the disgraceful coup plotters who carried out the coup attempt in that left hundreds of unarmed civilians dead and thousands injured

Balkan countries look to the EU for the positive standards and developments it brings to each country and the region but this does not mean they will cease to be regional countries with political, economic, historical, cultural ties to other regional countries.

This is not conditionality. This is bullying. As someone who was a principle investigator of a British Academy project on EU and NATO conditionality in the Balkans, I find this line of reasoning insulting not only to academia but also to what the EU used to stand for.

If this is the ‘new EU conditionality’ (‘if you want to join the EU do not have any ties to Turkey or Russia’) then the EU will cease to have any credibility in the Balkans. Even in the 1990s no one suggested conditionality should have such preposterous benchmarks. Reality check?
