Large-ish bunch of small-ish FSA-flagged factions in northwest Syria, incl. the Brotherhood's Failaq al-Sham, merge into a new National Liberation Front. Big name, but on the other hand their logo seems to be made up of outdated weapons and fighters surrendering. (via )

    > rebel backers must consider. They worked for years to build new institutions, but now that Assad wins, civilians return to life under the old system, carrying rebel-issued papers that are at best useless and at worst a life-long scarlet letter. This is not unfixable, so fix it.

Apart from this being a classic case of the Baathist thugocracy cutting off its nose to spite its face—Syria is in extreme need of educated youth after years of brain drain and draft; a pro-Assad businessman told me he can't even find secretaries to recruit—it is also something >

Review of civil-military stabilization in Afghanistan 2001–2017 finds the US "greatly overestimated its ability to build and reform government institutions." Seems relevant to Iraq, Syria, and Libya, where the US and many others face similar challenges.

Haven't seen the new edition, but this is one of the best all-round Syria civil war books I've read. Its focus is on foreign meddling, but it covers internal affairs too. If you're new to the issue or want a blow-by-blow recap, it's a great place to start.

After years of screaming insults at the United States and spitting in the general direction of NATO, Erdogan is baffled to find that some American politicians no longer think it is unproblematic to sell top-modern military tech to Turkey. :
