General info
Bf 109 F-4 in the Garage.
The Bf 109 F-4 is a Rank III German fighter with a battle rating of 3.7. It was in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.29.
The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations
General play style
The Bf 109 F-4's instrument panel.
A very good energy fighter for its tier, the Bf 109 F-4 can out climb most opponents due to its high power to weight ratio. However, WEP must be limited or else the engine would overheat, manual engine control can remedy this though. Despite that, it can BnZ and Rope-a-Dope well although one must watch out for severe control stiffening around 650km/h.
Unfortunately, the F-4s 15mm additional gondolas do not increase the damage output much at all, while reducing flight performance. However, it is recommended you at least use it once to see how effective it is, because depending on how you play it can really boost your kill abilities. For example, if you prefer to get into a dogfight, the additional weaponry will not be noticeably effective. However, if you fight in the vertical, where level speed and agility is not necessarily the most important, the additional Mg151s can mean the difference between a kill or nothing at all.
Vehicle characteristics
Tactics
The BF-109 F-4 is not a great plane when you compare it to the other Rank 3 planes, but it is effective nonetheless. Do not try to kill a plane by coming behind it and giving them all you got- you don't have much. Instead, try to scare your prey into a turn by peppering it with your 7.92mm MG-17s, and then blow its wing off with the cannon. The cannon - unfortunately - fires relatively fast and runs out of ammo pretty quickly, so that's why tail-end kills are hard to achieve.
Word to the wise: the F-4 is a fairly good turner for its class; if you are chased by a F4U, P-51, P-47D, F6F or Typhoon, turn and destroy. The forward wing slats give the F-4 an exceptionally short turning radius. However, to survive a tangle with a Spitfire is an ordeal. The best strategy would be to scissor until the Spit either runs out of ammo or overshoots you, and then try to dive and outrun the Spit. Then, repeat. Do not try to out-climb the Spitfire (community nickname is a `Spacefire´ for a reason), but try to outrun it in a dive. The Spitfire Mk-Vc are superior to the F-4, avoid them.

Counter-tactics
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Nimble- compared to Russian and American counterparts
- Relatively good armament
- Relatively good climb rate, possibly as good as a Spitfire or a maxed out P39 Aircobra
- Good sustained turn
- Faster than most opponents, such as the Spitfire mk.V, Yak-3, and La-5, especially at altitude
- Good performance at medium altitudes
Cons:
- Overheats quickly
- Additional armament can reduce performance critically, especially in a dogfight
- Poor cockpit visibility
- Prone to catching fire in a chase with a bomber
- Gun pods can't load stealth belts, thus giving the user away in a surprise attack.
- Turns sluggishly at speeds under 190km/h

Rating values are not a real-life representation of effects or damage and have been modified/simplified for viewer readability and satisfaction.
Weapon information:
Rate of fire how many rounds per minute the weapon will fire on average, rate of fire has a max and min range
Maximum dispersion at 500m this represents the accuracy of the weapon at 500m and might not be correct depending on how the weapon is mounted in the plane
Time to high chance of jamming this represents the of a weapon jamming every round is greater then a threshold decided by wiki staff (around 10% chance per round)
Projectile properties:
'Mostly self-explanatory. The field's colour represents the ingame's tracer colour.
Fuse sensitivity (This is a common source for "sparkles") is the threshold thickness required to set off an explosive charge. Average thicknesses are >1mm for duralumin, >0.1 for wood and >0.01 for canvas. The shell can pass through an aircraft without being set off, or only trigger after passing through the second layer and explode almost harmlessly outside the plane.
Physical projectile:
Damage rating uses statistical maximum (removing outliers) of all weapons of caliber up to Mk103 Minengeschoss as 100 unit fixpoint.
Fire rating also includes the projectile's penetration, it however does not include the ability of HE to cause fires. A fire rating of 0 does not mean it can not cause fires just means it's has the minimum chance.
Optimal gives the range at which kinetic striking power is halved.
High explosive:
Damage rating is the possible average damage (uses statistical maximum (removing outliers) of all weapons of caliber up to Mk103 for 100 unit fixpoint) over the maximum HE-radius
Radius. volumetric blast distance. Everything in the radius receives damage.
Fragmentation:
Damage rating is representation of total combined damage weighed against the chance of a fragment to hit an object inside the radius (uses statistical maximum (removing outliers) of all weapons of caliber up to Mk103 for 100 unit fixpoint).
Radius is the maximum travel range of the shrapnel fragments; Not everything in the radius receives damage, this can be because of luck or the fragment was stopped by something before it reached the target
MG151/20
Pros
- Excellent fire rating for 'IT'
- Excellent HE damage for 'HE-I (Mine)' = Minengeschoß
- Decent fragmentation damage & great radius for 'APHE'
- Decent fragmentation damage for 'FI-T'
- Great rate of fire
Cons
- Mediocre shell velocity (except HE-I (Mine))
- Bad long range (>500m) accuracy
- Rate Of Fire ~ 750.00 rounds per minute
- default gun
Maximum dispersion at 500m = 6.28m
Time to high chance of jamming = 9.70sec
|
|
- mg15120 new gun
Maximum dispersion at 500m = 2.44m

Please note this is still in the alpha stage and all the bugs in the data mining code have not been worked out yet. The data this was done on is not necessarily up to date.
Disclaimer:
Displayed information is under constant review. Game mechanics can and will change. The Wikipedia crew can not and does not guarantee up to date values.

Modules and improvements
Energy fighters require acceleration, they live and die by it. Therefore most of "flight performance" upgrades are advised: Compressor, Engine and Engine injection. Meanwhile the upgrades for the hub-firing 20mm Mg151 should not be forgotten. Upgraded belts (air-target) ASAP!
