    The Syrian regime's prisons are a vast network of concentration camps, where torture and murder are endemic. Despite the solid evidence, it's unlikely justice will ever be done, certainly not by an international court.

    Richard Pipes has died. Historian of the Bolshevik coup and the communist system in Russia. He refused, as so many academics did (and do), to pretend that anything but despotism and massacre was possible from this ideology and the fanatics who implemented it. He is a sad loss.
