I find it interesting that western visitors only accounted for 10%. When you hear about tourism problems in Japan one can easily think of Americans or others flooding these places but in reality over 50% are from China and Korea. I wonder if Japanese residents understand that.

I think that, for the Japanese, "外国人" is usually a term associated with westerners, and when they are referring to chinese and koreans they're more likely to use their respective terms, 中国人 and 韓国人 instead. The part in the article about TV mentioning....
-
TV mentioning the tourism boom but focusing mostly on Westerner's favorite places to eat, etc, is a good example of selective journalism that caters to the audience's stereotypical beliefs about the current state of things, for sure.

I think the problem is that tourism is one of the most promising sources of boosting the Japanese economy, so they're going to promote it as much as possible. Most gaijin living in Japan started as tourists as well...so difficult to say much :) (Disclosure: 5 Time Tourist)
-
Well most of ours are Korean and Chinese and literally unload from cruise ships in the morning and hop back on at night. Even the Japan Times article mentions Western expats only make up 10% of the tourism boost.
-
They aren't really here to learn about the culture or explore, they're here to buy a suitcase load of souvenirs and tell their friends about their luxury holiday.
-
I hate that so much. When I went to Japan, I went to visit family, learn more about the culture & my heritage. I went to festivals, learned the history... More people need to go places to learn about the place itself, not about what cool/ cute souvenirs that they sell!!!

I'm glad to see that there are actual numbers on this and not only me thinking that Kyoto has been so flooded with tourists.
But I had the impression that most of them were Chinese and not so much 'us' Westerners.
-
That's what the article (and a recent graph that I retweeted a few weeks ago) indicates! The biggest boom is in the asian market!
-
Exactly! I'm not sure about Fukuoka, but will discover soon, but most foreigners walking around Gion in yukata are Chinese. It's become really difficult to walk around those areas in the weekends.
-
Ah, before I forget: do you still have that graph somewhere perhaps?

I get annoyed about that Donki a minimum of 3 times a week. Often a lot more.

Living close to touristy places sucks sometimes. My friend has a house on the top of "the steepest street in the world" and people are knocking to his door to ask for using the toilet literally everyday.
