The statement banned in total Hazimis and more prominently al-Alwans books, not to mention the top three tier Salafi scholars Bin Baz, al-Uthaymin and al-Albani. Turki Benali had his ways, but as has detailed elsewhere, it wasn't always the official policy.

Not new, but the Islamic State forbids the publication/sharing of books by otherwise well-established Salafi scholars with some of them being well-respected names within Jihadi circles. The list includes (among others): Sulayman al Ulwan Ali al Khudayr Ahmed al Hazimi

“Their leader was Muhammad. Neither walls nor gates stood up before them, nor did weapon or shields, & they dominated the entire lands of the Persians,” arguably the first reference to Muhammad in Syriac sources, in the Anonymous Chronicle written sometime between 670-680 AD.

This is a good breakdown that is equally applicable on various Syrian factions like Ahrar al-Sham.

AQ-mufti Atiyatullah has several public statements and fatwas that strongly goes against ISIS ideology, which forced them to declare him misguided and deviant.

A crude reading would suggest that the claim Naji = ISIS mainly stem from his book being called "Management of Savagery" and since ISIS proudly profile themselves as management savages; voila!

2 foreign fighters in Syria think the new pro-AQ alliance will weaken HTS. A very strong possibility. Main difficulty the alliance face is shortage of weaponry/funds, something not so easy to acquire these days. (Closed borders, few areas they can attack from to acquire ghanima)

On one hand, bringing ex-Jund members closer to AQ and further from ISIS is a positive (AQ is officially anti-infighting). But on the other hand, AQ members have for months feared HTS attacking them, so this alliance might be intended as a deterrent.

Additionally, with the recent official ISIS takfir on Hurras al-Din, this move of Ansar al-Tawhid will surely bring a greater rift towards any sympathy between them two. (ISIS members/supporters had historically been somewhat supporting of Jund al-Aqsa).

While Jund al-Aqsa was previously known for their soft stance (if not outright pro) towards ISIS, it's thought that the most pro-ISIS members left with the splinter group Liwa al-Aqsa to ISIS territory, leaving the more pro-AQ group left.

Semi-official al-Qa'ida branch in Syria Hurras ad-Din announce an alliance with the formerly Jund al-Aqsa group Ansar al-Tawhid under the name Hilf Nusrat al-Islam, Alliance of Supporting Islam.

And btw, ISIS also considers members of Hurras al-Din (referring them as Hurras al-Shirk, Guardians of Idolatry) the same as Syrian regime "nusayri" soldiers, calling for ISIS members/Muslims in general to not feel any sympathy towards them until they repent from their disbelief.

ISIS makes takfir on Hurras al-Din (AQ in Syria) for being formerly with "apostates" (JN/HTS) and now having allegiance to other "apostates" (Taliban). Leaving HTS didn't remove their "apostasy", rather ISIS demands they openly acknowledge their apostasy and re-enter Islam.

IS makes takfir on Huras al-Din in its latest al-Naba’ issue, but please tell me more about how AQ and IS are going to come back together and create a jihadi conglomerate…

Because of course eliminating some dozen hardcore AQ members and a few hundreds hardline jihadis that just failed at even capturing a single village from the regime, trumps stopping the death of thousands of civilians and further empowering a genocidal regime.
