Question

Q: WpcMon can be terminated

I have realized that my son's computer time is somehow not being monitored by Family Safety. Further investigation shows that he as a "child" account can use Systemexplorer to terminate WpcMon.
Is it a flaw in family safety? How to solve this problem?

Hi Eppang,

  1. Which version of Windows are you using?
  2. Is he using a user account with administrator rights?

wpcmon.exe is launched automatically when a user logs into Windows by registering itself into the Windows Task Scheduler under the task name '\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\FamilySafetyMonitor'. With Scheduled Tasks, any script, program, or document can be configured to run when a user logs into the PC. These tasks start every time that Windows is booted and runs in the background.

1. Windows 8.1

2. No, he is using child account.

When I tried to terminate the process WpcMon using Task manager, it was not successful under his account; then I tried using systemexplorer to terminate it, WpcMon was killed.

Hi,

Are you referring to the system explorer application?

If you are referring to the system explorer, refer to these steps and check.

a. Find the System Explorer's files in say C:\Program Files (x86), and right click the main executable file, and select 'Properties' (If you are having trouble, you can find the installation path by viewing the properties of the shortcut on your desktop).
b. Click on the 'Compatibility' tab, and then click on the 'Change settings for all users' button at the bottom of the window.
c. Select the 'Run this program as an administrator' check box at the bottom of the window.
d. Click 'OK' to close the window and save the preference, and then click 'OK' again to close the properties of the file.
e. Try running the game from your sons account, and see if it fixes the problem.

Hi Ganesh, tahnks for your suggestion. But it is not relevant.

No. it is the free systemexpolorer program at systemexplorer.net web site. This program does not require installation, can be executed from any folder locations.

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestion.

Using family safety to block accessing to certain program is not a good idea. I have tried that. It causes some other programs not accessible although you have allowed all. Probably a better way is just to block certain program rather than allow a lot of programs except one or two programs. Microsoft should consider this.
