Dont cry. Of course my target is entire group of Pashtun supremacists when i use you as an example. Read my post again ;

They are types who steal history from others and fabricate history to suit their nationalism. Just think about his username, Shansabs of Ghor were Tajiks/Persians while people like him claim them to be Pashtuns. They even forged a fake history document by name of Pata Khazana in which Ghurids were turned into Pashtuns. Its not like i am on side of Tajik nationalists who are lot more extremists and hate-mongers to toxic levels (usually minority are more bitter) but i have to call a spade a spade. Extremists like him behave very similar to Pakistani nationalists. "Go back to Tajikistan" is the same hateful comment that i hear from Pakistani nationalists in the form of "Go back to Afghanistan. Afghanistan is a mess and failure and will continue to be a mess and failure if Pashtuns, its majority, do not give up on supremacism and bigotry. First they need to change the name of Afghanistan to neutral name Khorasan.

So what? he is just a mindless drone. Just because he survived APS attack, does not mean he is Allama Iqbal.

I find it interesting that even the “daman” of our areas maintain a certain level of religiosity.

For some time she was part of Tablighi jamaat and she even announced that she wont do damtob any more. But then she returned back to it. Are you not aware of that?

Afghanistani Purists have even translated terminology of internet to Pashto, height of weirdness and cringe. For example they have come up with "tarruni" for 'link' of website. For server they have 'palangar'. Did your plaar invent internet that you are using your tarruni and palangar?.

The word for bathroom in natural Pashto is ghusal-khana. There is no pure Pashto word for laterine in natural Pashto because it was first introduced by Angraiz. Pashtuns did not use laterine before arrival of Angraiz, majority still dont. Pashtuns in my Lakki Marwat and your Swabi use word laterine for laterine.

My thumbs down was for totally foreign words which are not naturalized. For newly coined words, the roots of which are Pashto, i have neither thumbs up nor down. If some one from Afghanistan is using roghtoon, then its understandable. But if some from Pakistan is using word roghtoon for hospital in spoken language, then he is being silly.

I will give an example of Afghanistani experimentation with Pashto. From 'poh' (h is silent) , we have pohay, pohaida, pohidan, pohidal, napohiya, pohidalai etc in natural Pashto. Afghanistan (unnaturally) derived new words from poh in second half of century e.g pohantoon, pohand, pohana, pohman, pohanzai, pohanmal, pohanyar etc..... making Pashto very messy. The word pohantoon made it to international newspapers when Farsiwans refused to accept it as a word for university and insisted that their word danishgah should only be used.

Yup i was talking about old walled city , known as Bagram fort in medieval period. Pashtuns (Khalils, Mohmands etc) were land-owners just outside those walls. The fort was heavily garrisoned with Mughal army and from where they used to send forces to deal with nearby rebellious Pashtun tribes. The was a Peshawar fort/town in existence before Akbar which had been completely destroyed by Dilazaks in post-Babur period. What ignorant people dont understand is that Punjabi/Indian people within the fort were not land-owners/masters of this region....they were nobody. Mughal records/documents mention Pashtun chieftains as people of Peshawar. All the "arbabs" (title given by Mughals) and mansabdars in Peshawer, were Pashtuns. The previous masters of the regions were also Pashtuns, Dilazaks. There were even Pashtun colonies in Peshawar valley during Hindu Shahi period.

Because no one in our areas understands roghtoon of Afghanistan (invented in second half of 20th century by adding -toon to rogh). Even a hundred years old woman living in isolated mountains of Pakhtunkhwa knows what hospital word means, they pronounce it as "astapaal". Before advent of Ferangis, you had just hakim-khanas, no hospitals. Angraiz introduced our ancestors to hospitals thus even our oldies are familiar with "astapaal". As Roghtoon is not a historical word so we cant say its proper to use roghtoon instead of haspataal. Similarly the word kitabtoon, invented by adding -toon to kitab , is also not naturalized in Lar-Pakhtunkhwa. "Librarai" is in usage. The historical and the most proper word for library in Pashto, is actually "kitab-khana", a loanword. And the Pashtun extremists/supremacists in Afghanistan were fighting with Farsiwan extremists over "pohantoon" when the word did not even exist half a century back. Whats the Pashto word they have invented for laterine, "ghwal-toon"?

Afghanistan "purified" Pashto in second half of 20th century and coined many new terms. Now the educated lot there speak a particular kind of Pashto which goes over my head. Interestingly the Pashto of illiterate people in Afghanistan is just like ours and i perfectly understand it. Its the illiterate rural Afghans who are speaking natural and fluent Pashto, not the educated lot.

This is my point of view:- If some one says rombanaey, thumbs up for him/her. If some one says awalanaey, also thumbs up for him/her. If some one says pehla, no thumbs up for him/her.

I have checked 1850s dictionary of Pashto and it has 'miliya' or 'mila' for meeting, encountering. Urdu had not yet penetrated into the region.

I concur with poderi. Andaa , Aaata etc are not part of Pashto language in any form. Some individuals might be using it in few places (most probably out of habit than ignorance) but it does not mean these words have become part of Pashto. Come to my Lakki Marwat, people say Angai for egg and danra for flour. Pashto of Peshawar city is not the standard. Even in 1848, a British officer reports that Pashto of Peshawar is heavily loaded with foreign words as its meeting place of different races of Central Asia and India , it was resting place for caravans . Cities are never the standard, always check the Pashto of rural areas. Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h was sent to desert in childhood to learn chaste Arabic, as Mecca was a city and its Arabic was not chaste. [A tidbit: the current city of Peshawar was built by Akbar and he settled it with Hindus and Muslims of Punjab and India as Afghans/Pashtuns in the surroundings were averse to city life. I read this in a 1780's source).

There was man in my area who had this ridiculous obsession. Once he was pondering what should be the pure Pashto word for cream-roll of Kashmiri bakers. He came up with "koch lashta", koch is word for butter and lashta is word for stick in our Pashto. He took his "koch-lashta" to his grave.

Khyber name by poderi in Pashtun

[–]Azad67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you accept the Banu Israel origin theory of Pashtuns than it’s a trace of an old Jewish past.

Its definitely not a trace of an old Jewish past. The only medieval source which throws light on the naming of this region, , to my knowledge, is Tarikh-i-Ferishta according to which Afghans built a fort in 10th century in this pass and named it Khyber, after concluding peace with Hindu Shahi kings. Thus the fort was built in post-islamic period and those Afghans were Musalman according to Tarikh-i-Ferishta. Obviously they were aware of the Khyber fort of Islamic history in which Khyber is described as impregnable fort with strong defenses, or some thing like that, thus the inspiration to name it Khyber. That fort in the pass was probably at Ali Masjid which always had existence of some fort in the recorded history of last few centuries (Mughlas, Durranis and British built forts at Ali Masjid). Whatever seem Jewish in our areas, is actually from Islam.

The oldest source to my knowledge, which mention the pass by name of Khyber, is Baburnamah. If there are other sources, then i have not read it. u/poderi

As for the specific example of shark, I highly doubt “mano” is a loanword from Hawaiian. Pashtuns have had even less contact with Hawaiians than with sharks, so it’s likely that the resemblance is a coincidence.

Its not a coincidence, Purists have "google". Shark is a very familiar word, it has to be substituted with a word from some unknown language. The admin of that page chose Hawaiian. May be admin of another page has come up with another "pashto" word for shark, picked from some African language.
