I was definitely not treated poorly for sure. The worst was that when saying hello (こんにちは) to some people in neighborhoods they would just ignore me, which is possibly because they just didn't want to deal with English, if they even spoke English.
Nobody is going to treat you poorly. Japan has some of the best hospitality in the world. It doesn’t mean they are comfortable compromising security in their building by allowing backpackers. It isn’t racism, & to call it that is an insult to those who face real discrimination.
