One of its most impressive uses was in Ramadi in 2015 when a front-end loader SVBIED knocked down 2 sets of concrete blast barriers before detonating on target. The secondary truck SVBIED levelled the 8-story building the Iraqi Army had used as a base

Similarly, IS have also employed up-armored front-end loaders as SVBIEDs themselves, often with a 2-man crew (driver + gunner). This allows them to pass through most obstacles, striking where the defenders think they’re safe. Here 4 examples from Mosul

During offensive operations against enemy outposts, IS would often bring up-armored front-end loaders along. When reaching enemy berms, the front-end loaders would punch a hole, allowing SVBIEDs to penetrate and strike their enemies’ rear areas

(THREAD) In Syria & Iraq, front-end loaders have primarily been used to construct berms and dig trenches, so it might not look like much of an offensive threat. However, for a group like IS who's military operations hinge on the use of SVBIEDs, their use can be devastating

The 3rd (& most recent) example was featured in a video from Barakah prov. (NE Syria) released on February 22, 2018 and shows a worker welding payload IEDs in place. Yikes.

In a video from Mosul released on Feb 14, 2017 IS showed what I previously thought was the first video footage of an SVBIED workshop. HOWEVER, the vehicle is actually a troop transport vehicle (note 2 side doors & typical armor shape) - Still 1st footage of a DIY APC workshop

(THREAD) There's a lot of footage documenting SVBIED factories captured from IS, but very little footage of active such facilities exist. In this thread I'll be showcasing the few existing examples. Here, an unofficial & undated photo of an IS up-armored SVBIED workshop in Iraq.
