On the #metoo
movement, a lot of news this week and statements that the movement seems to have arrived in Japan. I'm not convinced this is yet the case. I understand the movement not just as one of proclaiming non-tolerance of sexual harassment(which is the way it is manifesting)
Starting with Alyssa Milano, it was a torrent of individuals "coming out" about having suffered such abuse in a way that empowered others to also come forward with their own cases, to create a momentum of demand for accountability.
Japan is still coming to terms with the notion of sexual harassment existing at a level lower than rape, and needing to stamp it out. The minister of finance said the press corps should have not used female reporters. Fukuda said "in overall context" he was not sexually harassing
The opposition protests in parliament with dozens of lawmakers holding #metoo signs were not coming out as victims. They were expressing solidarity with the idea casual sexual harassment should not be tolerated. Which is really 30yrs behind most of the developed world
Fact is in this finance ministry case, the right and need for the victim to not come out and identify herself is a key point - fact is it is still not safe for sexual harassment victims to say #metoo without pretty much intolerable personal consequences
So - Japan is still a LONG way from having #metoo truly arrive, as much as it is needed
