With respect, I think you're wrong here. Under Trump, the GCC has splintered (because he gave Saudi Arabia & UAE a green light vs Qatar), the Yemen war has escalated & we have zero diplomatic involvement in Yemen or Syria, & the Iran deal is in jeopardy. That is officially worse.

On some things , yes that’s right. But Certainly no bigger a mess than W made. And BHO was no genius either. There’s not a single challenge in region that has a comprehensive or definitive solution. And any president would have confronted the same hot mess and dumpster fires.

Right. But squirting kerosene into the dumpster fire was not inevitable.

One could argue the very diplomacy you mention hampered the kind of progress that’s been made over the past year in Libya against IS & Islamists. President Obama insisted on “consensus politics” & didn’t pick a side. Better on Syria. Big change in Yemen yes. Continuity elsewhere.

Better on Syria? The ISIS campaign showed continuity. But they are AWOL on diplomacy with no interest in using the leverage we have. So score that as worse.

Continuity, fair, but they continued coz things had been primed by prev policy; no new admin. would’ve been able to do the right thing, like avoiding the divergence with Turkey that led to Afrin. Delegation to field commanders, enforcing RoE against Iran in Tanf, Tabqa & DeZ...

That ROE was established by us. I sat in the DCs, PCs, and NSCs. The big difference is being completely absent on diplomacy. Nothing. Zilch. All the leverage squandered. Aid to opposition cut. Troops in eastern Syria coming out. In exchange for...nothing.

They’re pulling out @hxhassan . Whether it’s a month, 6 months, or a year. Look at Jerusalem embassy. Look at the Iran deal. When Trump gets fixated on something eventually he overrules his advisors. The Trump wrecking ball is coming for our ISIS policy

Maybe but not yet decided. As far as I know, they’re staying. If they leave, it’s a guarantee fail, much like the 2011 withdrawal.

Not sure on this one. His desire to avoid being Obamaized — premature withdrawal leading to return of ISIS — is the one blinking yellow; plus Pompeo and Bolton — latter starts tomorrow — might delay decision for a good long while.

I hope you’re right. But this was his mantra during the campaign: “defeat ISIS. Get out.” And he seems to be pretty wedded to his campaign promises

The consensus, including among those who stayed on from the previous administration, is the withdrawal in 2011 was catastrophic. Trump does too. So, even if he wants to leave, it won’t be any time soon.

The consensus in the administration was also that tariffs were a bad idea. That Jerusalem embassy move was a bad idea. That leaving the Paris accords was a bad idea.
