Safe to say that we are witnessing a transformation of the Syrian conflict: The future of rebel areas is to be integrated into government-controlled territory. However the key confrontation, political and possibly military, is going to be with the SDF

Judging by the Putin-Erdogan-Rouhani press conference the three finally converge on the issue of SDF-controlled areas and US involvement there: They see it as an attempt to break Syria into parts.

In Turkey, Putin says delivery of S-400 to Turkey is now Russia's priority. He also expressed hope that Ankara will continue procuring arms from Moscow.

There is a bunch of issues that impede stronger cooperation: Turks still need a visa to travel to Russia; Turkish Stream capacity reduced; Ankara flirting with DC on the issue of Patriots despite S-400 contract; some trade barriers remain in place

Putin is in Turkey today on his first foreign trip after re-election. Syria is certainly on the agenda for the Russia-Turkey-Iran talks but first and foremost Putin will focus on economic cooperation with Ankara as he brings an enormous government delegation for bilateral summit

A source tells me the US asked Qatar to expel a number of Russian diplomats from the embassy in Doha as a show of solidarity with the West over . US allegedly identified Qatar as a weak link in MENA whose move could motivate others to follow suit, but Qatar refused

Russian paper that makes unique investigations on the North Caucasus rolls out results of their multi-year research project on Islam there. Key finding is that young people are bringing Islam to N/Caucasus, while secularism is receding

I hated making any comments about this UK-Russia spat over alleged poisoning, but massive expulsion of Russian diplomats by the US and the EU on a day when the entire country is in a state of shock and is mourning deaths of dozens of kids who perished yday is impossible to fathom

Realistically speaking stronger political ties between Moscow and Doha may only exist in a trilateral format Russia-Turkey-Qatar. This could create a stronger diplomatic and even military cover for Doha if it proposes that Russia is included in its military drills with Turkey

But at the same it is not the UAE or KSA but Qatar that produced the largest investment deal for Moscow in recent years (Rosneft deal), so Russia is looking to capitalize on the rift that exists in the GCC financially

One of the reasons why Qatar doubles down on relations with Moscow is the uncertainty in relations with the US. If this uncertainty is eliminated during Emir Tamim's visit to DC, Russia may find itself abandoned, which is why it is cautious about Qatari efforts in the first place

The Emir's visit should foremost be seen in the context of the Saudi King's trip to Russia in October. In Moscow it is seen as a GCC competition to score higher with foreign partners. It is less about Moscow itself but more about the Qatar-Saudi rivalry

The Emir of Qatar is in Moscow today before he sets off for the US. It's his first trip to Russia since the beginning of the GCC crisis. My Qatari contacts keep saying that Doha wants a real breakthrough in relations with Moscow but Putin is likely to be skeptical. Here's why:

Putin spoke to Omar Bashir on the phone and accepted his invitation to visit Sudan. To give you some context, last time Bashir came to Russia he asked Putin to set up a military base in Sudan. Some also say that Russian PMCs now operate in this country
