Guys. I want to talk about our dinner last night. We went to Ginza and ate at SushiZanmai, a chain sushi place. Cos it was Ginza, there were a fair amount of non-Japanese there.
Another table was openly perplexed at the paper slip ordering system which didn't have any English even though the menu had English. They ended up pointing at the picture menu to order and the staff filled out the paper slip for them.

Hmm this makes me wonder. Even on my first ever visit I ordered sushi in Japanese but...would the Zanmai chefs understand it if you ordered with the English names? Do the waiters translate if you write them on the order slip?
-
That’s a good question! I think pointing at the menu would work best if you cannot decipher the order slip yourself. The only bad part is that you cannot order any of the seasonal specials cos those are not translated.
-
Ah yes, I remember once trying to order a seasonal special years ago and getting the yomikata wrong, which caused the chef to laugh
-
Bravo for trying tho!
