I usually react to seeing/hearing 朝鮮 with more than a bit of side-eye because it seems mainly used by rabid anti-Korean racists, but I see a trending topic about Korean artists going to 北朝鮮 (North Korea). Does it not carry the same connotation in that case?

Hmn. Not sure what you are asking... 北朝鮮 is the normal official name for DPRK… 😐

Yeah, 朝鮮 is a bit racist but 北朝鮮 is just the name of the country

Yep, as I noted upthread I just hear people in my world talking about north Korea so rarely that I didn't know. It's not usual conversation fodder in Japanese in our family.

Also I don't trust dictionaries to reliably tell me things like "don't use this word it's racist" or "this is the canonical word for this country" so I wanted to be absolutely sure (by asking people on the internet, natch)

Nah. There are some well-established lists of “sensitive” words, where even the faintest hint of controversy means that broadcasters are “strongly advised” against uttering them on TV/radio etc. The line is generally pretty clear (if often erring on the side of over-caution)

Remember once seeing such a list (used by NHK etc) where even terms like 部落民 were flagged as “to be avoided”. Any dictionary worth its salt should warn you against controversial uses.

Alas I got burned by crowdsourced ones like Jim Breen's too many times with esoteric words crowding out more common ones, so even when I use a better one I wonder. Also my paper ones are mostly in the closet.

Also I don't have a tv here, so I definitely don't watch enough to know what's ok on tv.

Haven’t owned a TV since... err, ever. 🤗 (Definitely not about to start in Japan)
