Not much of a problem the next few days, snow will be mostly on the east coast, and maybe some heavy snow in the peak district and the north.
Bigger problem will be the deep cold until Thursday, most of the country will be well below freezing even during the daytime.
Potentially very heavy snow across the country on Friday and Saturday, thawing through Sunday. But the forecasts are less reliable that far ahead.

I've lifted mine from the Met Office's Twitter page. I think it said there could be snow 10-20cm deep in the amber areas and that on Tuesday this could reach as far as Birmingham and Northamptonshire.

I just put new tyres on the Land Rover so I'm secretly hoping for a proper Snowpocalypse, last time it was even a few inches I basically had the roads to myself, winched a couple of poor sods too.

However the last time we had thick snow up in Newcastle, when it thawed we had major flash floods.

All the talk is about the beast from the east, but WTF is that low pressure system out in the Atlantic. Must be part of it.

Also, windy.com is about a hundred times better than the Met Office, much as I love their work.

> proper Snowpocalypse

If only.

I lived in Switzerland for six months once in autumn/winter. I know it's quite pointless comparing a country famous for its world class metre-high alpine snow with good old Britain, but still. Let's get a sense of perspective. 20 centimetres of snow really isn't much. And it will probably be gone again in a few days' time.

I know exactly what you mean - I have spent two seasons in the French alps, those guys only get excited when there is more then a metre of snow on the roof and they can't clear the snow because there is nowhere to put it. We are pussies by comparison.

The drawback of this would be having to live in Switzerland, which is full of Swiss people.

If you're not on the Alps then all the snow is going to do is hide the mountains of dog shit and chewing gum which are all over the pavements there.

On the other hand, they have got the infrastructure and everything to deal with a metre of snow. Every town there has an assortment of heavy duty snow plow vehicles.

If we get five inches of snow in Britain, it throws the whole country into pandemonium because nobody is equipped to deal with it.

We aren't equipped for it because it's not worth it for the few days every decade it happens here.

On a related note, don't bother with winter tyres unless you're in the middle of nowhere. As in your nearest human neighbours are beyond the horizon. They're utterly pointless for driving around town here.

Winter tyres aren't just for snow though.

Summer tyres start losing their grip below temperatures of around +7 degrees celsius because cold temperatures harden the rubber mixture in them.

Winter tyres have a softer rubber mixture which stays soft well into subzero temperatures and thus improves grip on wintery roads, together with a different tread pattern compared to summer tyres (summer tyre patterns are typically designed to direct rain water away from the centre of the tyre, while winter patterns are made to "dig into" snow).

But the advantage over summer tyres, as I said, begins at seven degrees celsius. It's definitely worth the bother.

If for no other reason, changing your tyres is a reminder to inspect them and check their pressure. Poorly-maintained tyres are the leading cause of accidents after driver error. TPMS has helped the situation, but it won't warn you of tread wear.

I'm bit less down on winter tyres than that. If you can't avoid going out (my usual solution), and go on country roads (or snowy motorways), then winter tyres are a joy. Much less tiptoeing. Of course, you need the funds to run two sets of wheels and tyres, and somewhere to store the other set.
These days, I just say fuck it and stay home.

Wrong way round, m7. The usefulness of winter tyres ends at 7C, which is a temperature typically surpassed in most urban environments in this country around 350 days a year. Unless you have a postcode to yourself, you aren't really going to see the benefit, as they really come into their own when you get away from urban areas or motorways. If we experience a situation where they'd be useful, then the question of whether it's safe to go out at all is more relevant.

You're talking out of your arse, m4t.

For one thing, you could actually leave your winter tyres on year-round and have good traction and roadholding at any temperature above +7°C. It's not advised simply because the soft rubber of winter tyres will wear more quickly in warm conditions. Other than that, good winter tyres will actually outperform many summer tyres on a wet surface in 20°C weather. But again, not recommended because of increased tyre wear.

Summer tyres on the other hand actually begin to underperform compared to winter tyres from about +12°C. Especially when you have to brake suddenly or when you're cornering at higher speeds.

As a rule of thumb, you can indeed wait to put on your winter tyres until the daytime temperature where you live begins to average +7°C and below. If you do 95 percent of your driving in urban Greater London, then maybe you can do without winter tyres. But if you live further up north in a small town or village, it's money well spent.

Thank you for your support.

It's pretty bad, clearly the blizzards have just blasted through the admittedly large gaps in the door. It looks like an abandoned arctic research station, properly snowblown. It's really bringing home how poorly maintained it has been for the last few years - I've only just moved back up here.

I'll rebuild once The Thaw happens. I'm just glad it's only tool storage now, it used to have a few grand's worth of active computing power.

I'm half tempted to leave the door open to see what happens.

True enough, we had minus fifteen windchill this morning evidently.

I've been looking for an excuse to go out in my apocalypse spec Land Rover all week, but the reality is people are still on the roads, they're just crawling everywhere at 10mph.

Shed update is that I went back in to move some expensive stuff out, and now the door is wedged open, so that settles that. Pray for me.

I drove home tonight listening to the Fargo Theme in my car. If you're a big fan of the film and the series like me, it's just sublime to be driving down a snowy B road at night with the theme music on full blast. Really makes you feel like you're in the movie itself. It kind of helps that my car has a factory Bang & Olufsen sound system. It really comes into its own with music like this.

I'd not buy a Defender these days, they seem to be in a price bubble, and they're CONSTANTLY being nicked as it's easy and you can sell the older ones to Americans for silly money. Even a rolling shell is three grand now. A Discovery is the way to go, a TDi one anyway, the TD5 tends to have a lot of electrical faults. The TDi doesn't really have any electrics so it's hard to go wrong. And they don't get stolen nearly as much.

I'll always love the Defender and how it looks but I have no interest in spending 7 or 8 grand on one when the Disco is just as capable, and nicer to drive anyway.

Might go a bit knackered on a farm, mind, I bought some parts of a chap who had one parked in his yard and the entire inside was covered in moss.

SPOILER ALERT. American Psycho is a movie about having a persona that is impenetrable to others actually knowing yourself. It was about people that worked hard to gain the position they occupy (mentally difficult), becoming a part of high culture, and becoming very physically fit. However, the social autism of living life by an intellectual formula lead to a mental breakdown.
