So Elon Musk has actually gone and done it. Yesterday, the tech billionaire successfully launched his own Tesla Roadster into space in the name of space exploration.
When we announced the news yesterday that Musk was deadly serious about sending his own personal Tesla Roadster into space, some of you may have scoffed at the idea. But now, he has actually gone and done it.
The Roadster and its passenger ‘Starman,’ played a pivotal role in the very first Falcon Heavy test flight acting as ballast. At 3:45 PM EDT yesterday with just 15 minutes remaining in the launch window, the Falcon Heavy blasted off from Launchpad 39A at the Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
As you can see in this video, the roadster and its ‘driver’ are launched into space at around 41:20:
The fact that the Roadster was launched being accompanied by David Bowie’s ‘Life on Mars’ adds a whole tonne of cool factor. It’s just an astonishing thing to watch as you realise that somebody has actually sent a car into space with a dummy driver to further the reach of mankind.
If you think that the ‘Starman’ is there just for show, then think again. He is wearing the SpaceX spacesuit which will be transmitting data back to earth as the company seeks supply contracts with NASA as it drifts through the vast expanse of space for the next few hundred million years or so.
You can watch the 'Starman' live in the Roadster here:
For those of you familiar with Hitchhikers’ Guide To The Galaxy, you cannot help but be amused at the message on the sat-nav screen, which sounds like good advice for the ‘Starman’ as he drifts through the heavens.
SpaceX has confirmed that the Roadster will eventually be pushed into a solar orbit, where it will float around the cosmos without range anxiety ever becoming an issue.
Is the Tesla Roadster launching into space the greatest road trip ever seen? Let us know in the comments.

People of Norfolk in the UK are very pleased a Lotus has "technically" made it to space. Are James May and Richard Hammond going to relaunch their space project (SPACERELIANT).
