I don't care what the founder says, in my household it is NOT the Jraphics Interchange Format.
-
Yes, and the acronym AWOL for "Absent without leave" is pronounced "ah-wowl" instead of "ay-whol" because each letter of an acronym is always pronounced the same as the initial letter in the word it represents.
-
And knife is pronounced with a short k before it. AS INTENDED.
-
Oh, certainly. "kuh-NIF-eh" has always been the canonically correct pronunciation.

I guess those same people bring "Jifts" instead of "Gifts" to a birthday party, right? :P
-
And you guys probably go see guirraffes at the zoo then?
-
What about a jolden retriever, or a joldfish? GIF has he first three letters of gift and stands for Graphics Interchange Format. The first word that it stands for has a hard G. A Hard G makes more sense. Doesn’t matter what the owner says, it’s what the world says now.
-
That’s not how it works though? It’s an accronym, the word it stands for is irrelevant. It’s a word, and generally a G followed by an I makes a soft G sound, with exceptions. The creator *does* matter, because he’s the one who made the word. It’s the name of the format, so he
-
decides how it’s pronounced
-
The creator has no control over the rest of the world and as such it is what the world calls it. More people are using a hard G.
-
AWOL. If we follow your system then we should say ah-wol instead of ay-whol.
-
That’s ā, it’s a hard A and it is wôl, ā-wôl. Pretty simple really. Hard A, hard G. Seeing as GIF stands for Graphics interchange Format. Do you say jraphics or jift? The fact that it has 3 of 4 letters of gift and the G is for graphics it’s more compelling to use a hard G.
