「それぞれ」「各々」「各」の表現

用語の使い方

「それぞれ」　「各々」　「各」
(respective(ly), individual, corresponding, each, every)

これらの言葉は明細書で多用されていますが、必ずしも正確に使われているとは限りません。
これらの言葉が含まれている文章の場合は、日本語から英語への1対1の対応ではなく、タイトルに掲げた単語のどれを用いるべきかを、英文のレベルで判断して決めなければなりません。

たとえば、「それぞれ」を辞書で引くとrespectivelyが出てきますが、これをそのまま適用できない場合が数多くあります。

(1) respectiveとrespectively

(例1－1) 第1および第2の内部導体はそれぞれ第1および第2の外部電極に接続されている。

(誤) The first and second internal conductors are connected to the first and second external electrodes.

この文章ですと、たとえばfirst internal conductorがどちらのexternal electrodeに接続されているのかが明確ではありません。
 

(正) The first and second internal conductors are connected to the first and
second external electrodes, respectively.

The first and second internal conductors, respectively, are connected to the
first and second external electrodes.

respectivelyを加えることによって、first internal conductorはfirst external
electrodeに、またsecond internal conductorはsecond external electrodeに接続していることが明確になります。
このように、respectivelyは2つ以上のものが並列に述べられていて、そのあとでそれに関連するものが同じ数でかつ同じ順序で並列に並べられている場合に、双方の対応関係を明確にする目的で用いられます。

したがって、この文章は次のように書き換えることができます。
 

(正) The first internal conductor is connected to the first external electrode and
the second internal conductor is connected to the second external electrode.

respectivelyを使用すると相互の関係がわかりづらくなる場合には、面倒でも上記のように文章を分けたほうが良いといわれています。

したがって、1：1の対応関係のない文章にrespectivelyを使用した次例は誤用です。

(誤) The first and second internal conductors are connected to the external electrodes, respectively.

ここでは外部電極が複数あることはわかりますが、複数の外部電極は同じ名称で呼ばれており、並列要素ではないのでrespectivelyは使用できません。
このような場合はrespectiveを用います。

(正) The first and second internal conductors are connected to (the) respective external electrodes.

これによって、first internal conductorが一つのexternal electrodeに、second internal conductorがもう一つのexternal electrodeに接続されていることがわかります。
また、この例に示すように、respectiveは複数名詞の前につけます。
単数名詞の場合は respective ではなくcorresponding を使用します。
(これについては、次号以降で詳細に説明します)。

米国特許のrespectiveの用例を調べた結果、実に多くの誤用があることがわかりました。
米国人にとってもrespectiveの使い方が難しいことを示しています。

(2) respectiveとrespectivelyの用法

米国特許で見られるこれらの用法をいくつか拾い上げて、それが正しいか否かについて考察します。

(1) Manipulation of the delay times is accomplished through adjustment of analog
programming voltages applied to the respective delay elements. (USP. No. 6,326, 813)

delay timesに対してそれぞれdelay elementsが対応しているということで正しい用法です。

(2) The apparatus includes an interferometer, both the reference beam and
measurement beam of which are directed toward the object and reflected by respective reference and measurement sites thereof, such that axial motion of the object during measurement affects both beams equally. (USP. No. 6,307,634)

reference beamとmeasurement beam という2つの並列要素に、reference and measurement sitesという2つの並列要素が対応しているので、次のように書き換えることもできます。

The apparatus includes an interferometer, both the reference beam and measurement beam of which are directed toward the object and reflected by the reference and measurement sites, respectively, thereof .

(3) Each bag has at least one discrete region of weakness between each aperture and the inward side of the respective handle stack which can be broken for detachment of a bag from the dispenser. (USP. No. 6,325,214)

このケースでは、主語がeach bagと単数に還元されていて、handle stackも単数で表現されています。
したがって、respective ではなく corresponding を用いるべきです。

(正) Each bag has at least one discrete region of weakness between each aperture and the inward side of the corresponding handle stack which can be broken for detachment of a bag from the dispenser.

(4) The first and second voltage driver each include a respective series circuit of an npn transistor and a bidirectional impedance element coupled between a point of constant potential and the respective outputs of the first and second voltage drivers. (USP. No. 6,324,028)

このケースでは、主語は確かに2つのものが記載されています(主語の driver は drivers の間違い)が、eachで単数に還元されているので、a respective series circuit は a corresponding series circuit にすべきです。
the respective outputsはthe first and second voltage drivers のそれぞれのthe outputということで、このrespectiveは正しい用法です。

(正) The first and second voltage drivers each include a corresponding series circuit of an npn transistor and a bidirectional impedance element coupled between a point of constant potential and the respective outputs of the first and second voltage drivers.

(5) Selection of the resistance of each respective resistance devices is automatically controlled in accordance with predetermined programming. (USP. No.6,322,674)

これも単数 ( devices はdevice の誤り) の名詞に respective を用いた誤用です。
respective を取り除いても意味は通じますが、強いてrespectiveの代わりに何かを用いるとすれば individual が適切でしょう。

(正) Selection of the resistance of each individual resistance device is automatically controlled in accordance with predetermined programming. (USP. No. 6,322,674)

上記のように、respective や respectively は native writers にとっても、正しく使い分けるのが難しい言葉であると言えます。

(3) corresponding

corresponding は「対応する[一致する]」という意味を持つ形容詞です。
corresponding は上述したように、単数のものの対応関係を示す場合によく使用されます。

(3-1) The door identifier 146 is used to identify the corresponding door 162.
The gateway handler 168 is used to facilitate the transport of the remote object invocation request to the corresponding node. (USP. No. 6,151,639)

(ドア識別子146はそれに相当するドア162を確認するのに用いられる。
ゲートウェイ操作子168はリモートオブジェクト呼び出し要求を対応するノードにトランスポートするのを助けるのに用いられる。)

(3-2)
This modified silicon substrate is generally known as the heater die or heater chip, and can include not only the individual heaters or heating elements formed thereon but also driver transistors, each one connected to a corresponding heater, and electronic circuitry for controlling the selective actuation of each of the individual heaters. (USP. No. 5,742,307)

この例では、individualがでてきますが、これについては次号で説明します。

correspondingは化学特許における化合物の例示によく使われます。この場合は、複数が一般的です。

(3-3) Particularly suitable organic film formers are polymers of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid which may optionally contain limited quantities of copolymers and the corresponding esters, nitriles and/or amides. (USP. No. 5,868,872)

(特に好適な有機フィルム形成材料はアクリル酸および／またはメタアクリル酸で、限定量の共重合体およびこれらの酸のエステル、ニトリル、および／またはアミドを任意に含んでもよい)

(3-3) Starting compounds which may optionally be used are the corresponding salts with volatile acids, such as acetates, basic acetates, basic lead acetate and formiate. (USP. No. 5,734,000)

(任意に用いることのできる出発化合物は揮発性の酸との対応する塩、たとえば酢酸塩、塩基性酢酸塩、塩基性酢酸鉛、および塩基性蟻酸鉛である)

この文章で、formiate は正しくは formate ですが、どういうわけかこのスペルが実際の特許や文献で少なからず見当たります。

(4) individual

individual は「分けることのできない」という原義に由来し、「個々の」と言う意味を持っています。
したがって、respective や correspondingと 異なり、対応関係の意味はもっていません。

(4-1) These output signals may then be received by electronic circuitry designed　for quantitative and/or qualitative detection of the flow of various substances　including individual particles, particles flowing as a continuum, and non-turbulent fluids. [USP. No. 6,346,888]

(次いで、これらの出力信号は、個々の粒子、連続体として流れる粒子、および非乱流流体を含む種々の物質の流れを定量および／または定性的に検知するよう設計された電子回路によって受け入れられてもよい。)

(4-2) Communication with individual implants can also be enhanced through half-cycle amplitude modulation –a technique that allows bit rates up to twice the　energizing frequency. [USP. No. 6,345,203]

(個々のインプラントとの通信も2分の1周期の振幅変調－付勢振動数の2倍にまでビットレートを上げる技術－によって亢進され得る。)

(4-3) Improved control over the thermal stability of each groat is provided by enhancing the removal of thermal energy from the individual groats during Maillard reactions. [USP. No. 6,284,299]

(各脱穀粒の熱安定性の制御はメイラード反応中に個々の脱穀粒から熱エネルギーの除去を強化することにで改善される)

以上のように、日本語はどうであれ、一つ一つを強調する場合にindividualを用います。

なお、individualには「個人の」という意味もあります。

(4-4) Through the Virtual Campus a learner can communicate with others, create and update an individual work plan, access required resources, store work, and be apprised of Virtual University announcements. [USP. No. 6,347,333]

(仮想キャンパスによって、学習者は他人と連絡をとったり、個人の学習計画を作成・更新したり、必要とする資源にアクセスしたり、課題を保存したり、仮想大学からの通知を受けたりすることができる)

次の例のindividualはsingleと同じ意味に用いられています。

The present invention is directed to a method of forming an electrically insulating layer on a steel article such as a stack of electrical steel
laminations or an individual, unstacked electrical steel lamination, comprising exposing the article to an oxidation atmosphere, and to a temperature (such as at least about 800.degree. F.) for a time sufficient to form on the article an electrically insulating layer comprising hematite. [USP.　No. 6,284,388]

(5) each

each と every を形容詞として使用する場合は、いずれも単数扱いですが、each は複数のものの集まりを個別に見るのに対して、everyは全体的に見るという違いがあります。
したがって、日本語に表現する場合も、each は「各々」の又は「めいめいの」と訳されていますが、every は「あらゆる」又は「すべての」などに訳されています。

では、each の用法を整理しておきます。
まず、代名詞としての each です。
each の用法として最も一般的なもので、each of the 複数名詞の形で用いられます。
これは複数から単数への繋ぎの役割を果たしています。
それまで複数で記述していたものを個々に記述する必要のある場合に、使用されます。

(5-1) Each of the heater dies 50 includes the electronic circuitry necessary to select and fire each of the individual resistors 34 located thereon as previously described. Each of the heater dies 50 also includes the appropriate connecting pads for connecting the various supply voltages and control signals as in one embodiment described with reference to FIG. 2. (米国特許 5,742,307号)

(各ヒーターダイ５０は、前に述べたように、その上に設けられた個々の抵抗器３４の各々を選択し通電するための電気回路を含んでいる。また、各ヒーターダイ５０は種々の供給電圧に接続するための適切な接続パッドを含み、図2を参照して説明した実施形態と同様の方法で信号を制御する)

次は、形容詞としての each の用例です。each of the 複数名詞の代わりに each 単数名詞で表現することで同じ効果が得られます。

(5-2) Reactive substances suitable as partial cross linking agents, defined now as Reactant II, are polyfunctional compounds in the sense that each molecule contains at least two reactive sites for reaction with at least two secondary amine groups present in Reactant I. (米国特許5,912,306号)
(部分架橋剤に適した反応性物質(反応剤Ⅱとする)は、各分子が反応剤Ⅰにある少なくとも二つの二級アミン基と反応するための少なくとも二つの反応サイトを持っているという意味においては、多官能化合物である)

Claim (請求項) で each を用いる場合は、antecedent (先行詞) との関係で代名詞用法の方が無難です。

each には副詞としての用例もあります。be 動詞の場合は、each はbe 動詞の後に置きます。

(5-3) The solenoid valves 98 are each mounted on a PC (printed circuit) board 106 which contains a number of electrical terminals, e.g. two for each valve 98. 6,102,068号)

(ソレノイドバルブ９８は各々プリント基板1０６に実装される。プリント基板1０６はいくつかの、例えば各バルブ９８に対して2つの電気端子を含んでいる)

上記の文章の最後の each は(5-3)と同じ形容詞です。
助動詞のある場合は each はその後に置きます。

(5-4) The particles may be dispersed within a suspending fluid and may each contain a plurality of solid particles or a dye or both. (米国特許6,067,185号)

(粒子は懸濁流体に分散してもよく、また、粒子は各々複数の中実粒子及び／又は染料を含んでもよい)

一般動詞の場合は、each はその前に置かれます。

(5-5) The deposition chambers each have their own sample table.
(成長室はそれぞれ専用の試料台を備えている)

(5-3)から(5-5)の副詞用法では、主語は複数、それを受ける動詞も複数が原則です。

最後に、Claim などでよく出てくる each の用法をあげておきます。
複数のものの後にそれぞれを個別に記述するのに分子構文(each ～ing)を用います。

(5-6) Apparatus 10 includes a source register 12, which may, for example, contain sixteen bit locations, each containing one bit of data. (米国特許5,214,598号)

(装置1０は、例えば、1６ビットの記憶場所を含んでもよいソースレジスタ12を有し、各記憶場所は1ビットのデータを含む)

(6) every

前回説明したように、each が複数のものの集まりを個別に見るのに対して、every は全体的に見ます。
したがって、日本語の明細書に出てくる「それぞれ」「各々」「各」という場合
にeveryが当てはまることはほとんどありません。

また、一般的にeachの場合は少数の場合に使用されるのに対して、everyの場合は少数に対してはあまり用いられません。
特許明細書の出現率で見ると、everyはせいぜい2０％の特許にしか使用されず、しかも一つの特許にもわずか2度くらいしか使用されていません。
一方、eachは約８０％の特許に見られ、一つの特許に平均1５個使用されています。

(6-1) Finally, operating experience with autoclaves has indicated that results vary widely and biological testing must often be done on nearly every load to insure that no live virus enter the landfill and possibly drinking water. [USP.No. 5,427,738]

(最後にオートクレーブによる操作実験で分かったことは、結果が大きく変化するため、ほとんどあらゆる負荷に関して生物学的なテストをしばしば行ない、生きたウィルスが埋立地や飲み水に入らないことを確かめなければならない、ということであった)

every は数を表す言葉の前について、「･･･ごとに｣を意味する副詞句を作ります。
この機能はeachにはありません。
everyを使うべきところに each を使っている翻訳者がたまにいますが気をつけてください。

(6-3) Red bags and boxes are normally picked up by contract medical waste haulers at intervals of from once per day to once every three days. [USP. No. 5,427,738]　

(赤い袋や箱は契約医療廃棄物運送業者によって、通常1日1回から３日に1回の間隔で回収される)

(6-4) Preferably, SKIP symbols are inserted approximately every 512 transmitter clocks. [USP. No. 6,151,689]

(好ましくは、ＳＫＩＰ符号が約５12個のトランスミッタクロックごとに挿入される)

(6-5) In general, no more than about three non-hydrocarbon substituents or hetero atoms, and preferably no more than one, will be present for every 10 carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon based groups. [USP. No. 5,969,068]
