先日、日本記者クラブで行われた、日米同盟・日米関係推進をモットーとするUS-Japan LINK　20周年記念講演会「これからの日米関係、これからの日米同盟　稲田朋美防衛大臣　＆ Dennis Blair大将　共同講演会」に参加し、U.S. – Japan LINK米軍事顧問役として、私はBlair（ブレアー）元海軍大将のお世話をさせていただきました。

彼は１９９９年－２００２年の間、太平洋軍の最上位の軍事指揮権を持つ太平洋軍司令官を務め、２００９年～２０１０年は国家情報長官の任に就いていました。そして２０１４年からは笹川平和財団アメリカ会長として活躍しています。

このBlair元海軍大将は米海軍内において伝説の人物でもあります。なぜならば、彼が駆逐艦の艦長時代、なんと艦の後ろで水上スキーにチャレンジしたからです。もちろん私も以前からこの話を知っていましたが、今回本人から直接その経緯などを聞くことが出来、大変嬉しかったです。

The other day I participated in the subject seminar held at the Japan National Press Club. The keynote speakers were The Honorable Tomomi Inada, Japan’s Defense Minister, and retired Admiral Dennis Blair. As the U.S. Military Affairs advisor to U.S.- Japan LINK, my role was to take care of Admiral Blair.

 

Admiral Blair served as the Commander, U.S. Pacific Command from 1999-2000. As such, he was the senior U.S. military commander in the Pacific area. He also served as Director of National Intelligence from 2009 – 2010. He is currently the Chairman of the Board at Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA.

 

Admiral Blair is somewhat of a legendary figure in the U.S. Navy, mainly because during his stint as the Commanding Officer of a guided missile destroyer (USS Cochrane DDG-21), he tried to water ski behind the ship. I had known about this already, but hearing what actually transpired from the man himself was extremely interesting.
